Job Summary

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to join a full-time research project in the Ndhiwa region. This role is essential for the successful implementation of study activities focused on health interventions. The responsibilities include direct engagement with study participants for screening, recruitment, and the provision of relevant health services in accordance with established guidelines, alongside accurate data collection, intervention delivery, participant follow-up, and strict adherence to study protocols. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication and interpersonal skills and a commitment to ethical research practices within the Ndhiwa community.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the study design and objectives to effectively contribute to the successful implementation of all research-related activities within the Ndhiwa site.

  • Proactively screen, recruit, and obtain informed consent from eligible study participants within the Ndhiwa community, adhering to ethical guidelines and ensuring their understanding of the study.

  • Offer relevant health services to study participants within the clinic setting in Ndhiwa, strictly following established protocols and guidelines.

  • Deliver study interventions accurately and consistently, both at the time of participant enrollment and through subsequent communication methods as outlined in the research protocol for the Ndhiwa study.

  • Implement study questionnaires and standard operating procedures (SOPs) meticulously during data collection in Ndhiwa to maintain the integrity and accuracy of the research data.

  • Diligently follow up with study participants in Ndhiwa to schedule and conduct follow-up appointments at the intervals specified by the research design, ensuring high participant retention within the local community.

  • Conduct thorough participant endpoint ascertainment according to the study's guidelines and provide necessary support and training to facility staff in Ndhiwa on specific study requirements and data collection procedures.

  • Serve as a key point of contact for study participants in Ndhiwa, providing them with accurate information, addressing their queries, and offering ongoing support throughout their involvement in the research study.

  • Maintain clear, consistent, and timely communication with the Study Coordinator and other Heads of Departments (HODs) regarding the progress of the Ndhiwa arm of the study, recruitment targets, and any challenges encountered during field activities.

  • Ensure strict compliance with the study protocol and all relevant ethical and regulatory procedures to uphold the highest standards of research conduct and data integrity within the Ndhiwa context.

  • Guarantee the accurate and timely reporting of relevant data from the Ndhiwa site in accordance with the specifications of the study protocol and reporting timelines.

  • Consistently work in a highly professional and ethical manner within the Ndhiwa community, demonstrating competence, accountability, and unwavering integrity in all assigned research tasks and interactions with participants and colleagues.

  • Undertake any other relevant duties as assigned by the Study Coordinator to facilitate the successful execution of the research project within the Ndhiwa region and contribute to its overall goals.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Must possess a Diploma in Social Sciences, Public Health, Counselling, Community Development, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer skills, including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
  • Must exhibit keen attention to detail and possess a strong ability to follow instructions and established research procedures accurately and consistently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential for effective interaction with study participants and the research team in Ndhiwa.
  • Must be non-judgmental and demonstrate the ability to interact respectfully and professionally with individuals from diverse backgrounds and circumstances within the local community.
  • Prior experience in relevant health service provision and adherence to protocols is a desired qualification for this role.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills, be adaptable to varying field conditions in Ndhiwa, and demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Training on relevant health service delivery guidelines will be considered an added advantage for candidates.
  • The ability to ride a motorbike and possession of a valid riding license will be considered an added advantage, particularly for facilitating field-based data collection and participant follow-up activities within the Ndhiwa region.
