Job Summary
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a dedicated Mental Health Nurse to play a vital role in providing essential mental health services within the Hagadera refugee camp and local community. In collaboration with the Health team and under the supervision of the Mental Health Officer, this position will involve direct patient consultations, staff supervision and mentorship, training development and facilitation, community awareness campaigns, and robust reporting, all aimed at improving the overall quality of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) care.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct consultations at the 3 mental health clinics within the camp, including the assessment of psychiatric patients, appropriate interventions, rational prescriptions, and referrals for other services.
- Provide supervision to Incentive staff working at various clinics, ensuring quality care delivery.
- Ensure that all required documentation is completed in a timely and professional manner.
- Provide Psychological First Aid (PFA) to address the mental health needs of both refugees and the host community.
- Develop, plan, and facilitate trainings for refugee mental health department staff, Community Health Workers (CHWs), Medical Assistants, Nurse Aids, community leaders, religious leaders, support groups, teachers, and other stakeholders.
- Lead community awareness campaigns on mental health issues.
- Oversee the preparation and compiling of quality department work plans, and weekly and monthly HIS reports.
- Create an appropriate networking system with other relevant implementing partners, line ministries, hospital departments, and community stakeholders through referrals and advocacy.
- Ensure that all work with clients is kept confidential and that ethical practices are always observed.
- Oversee and conduct individual case management of patients on follow-up at the mental health department, ensuring case management goals are properly achieved.
- Provide mentorship to mental health assistants working in the MH department through continuous education, guidance, supervision, and support.
- Design mental health trainings for mental health workers and other stakeholders.
- Take charge of the mental health department when the Mental Health Officer is away from the office.
- Develop referral pathways and systems, and encourage collaboration between local partners, leaders, CBOs, INGOs, and Government ministries.
- Attend inter-agency MHPSS meetings in Dadaab at UNHCR to improve service delivery and showcase IRC's work.
- Assist with any other related activities/duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
Key Result Areas: Improvement in the overall quality of MHPSS care for all patients/clients in Hagadera refugee camp.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
- Diploma/Degree in Psychiatric Nursing from a recognized institution.
- At least 2-3 years of field experience within a Humanitarian, NGO/Agency in the same or similar position.
- Extensive experience providing psychiatric care to patients from a busy hospital setting.
- Flexibility and adaptability to a changing environment.
- Skilled at working effectively as a team member.
- Working knowledge of English and Kiswahili (both written and verbal).
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing requirements and needs.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word & Excel).
- Ability to work effectively in a stressful refugee environment.
