The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), a leading health research institution in Kenya, is dedicated to improving community health through impactful scientific studies. The Economic Advantages of Readers for Near Vision (EARN Trial), a significant research project based in Kisii County, aims to evaluate the impact of providing near-vision glasses to working-age individuals with presbyopia. We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Field Supervisor – Ophthalmic Nurse/Ophthalmic Clinical Officer to play a crucial role in overseeing the data collection process for this important trial in Kisii.

Job Summary

The Field Supervisor – Ophthalmic Nurse/Ophthalmic Clinical Officer will be responsible for providing expert guidance and training to data collectors, ensuring the quality and accuracy of collected data, and maintaining strict adherence to ethical guidelines and research protocols. This role involves providing essential logistical support for data collection and maintaining effective communication with the research team.   

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive guidance and training to data collectors, including effective on-the-job training and coaching to ensure proficiency in data collection procedures related to ophthalmic assessments.   
  • Ensure the highest quality of data collection by diligently monitoring field processes, providing constructive feedback to data collectors on ophthalmic data points, and rigorously verifying data accuracy.   
  • Strictly ensure that ethical guidelines, research protocols, and all other relevant standards are consistently followed throughout the entire data collection process in the field, particularly concerning participant consent and data privacy.
  • Provide crucial support to data collectors with logistical matters, including efficiently arranging participant interviews and effectively managing available resources for ophthalmic examinations.   
  • Proactively address and resolve minor issues and challenges that may arise during the data collection process in the field, especially those related to ophthalmic assessments and data recording.   
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with the Principal Investigator and the Study Coordinator, providing regular and comprehensive updates on the project's progress in the field, including any challenges or successes in data collection.   
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of all field activities undertaken and the corresponding data collected, ensuring accurate documentation of ophthalmic findings.   

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Must possess a Diploma in Nursing or a Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery.
  • A higher diploma in ophthalmology will be a significant added advantage, demonstrating specialized knowledge in eye health.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications for data management and communication.  
  • Experience in conducting randomized controlled trials will be a valuable asset.
  • Experience in coordinating a community eye health programme or clinical research will be highly regarded.
  • Knowledge of research ethics and good clinical practice is essential for this role.   
  • Must have a willingness to live in Kisii County and be able to undertake extensive travel within the study area to oversee data collection.   
  • Working knowledge of REDCap and/or smartphone-based data collection apps is required for efficient data management.

Desirable qualities

  • Strong supervisory skills with the ability to effectively guide and support a team of data collectors.
  • Excellent planning skills to ensure efficient field operations and data collection timelines are met.   
  • Strong communication and reporting skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey information to the research team.   
  • Good interpersonal skills to build rapport with the data collection team and study participants.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player within a multidisciplinary research environment.
