Job Summary
The ICU Medical Officer will be responsible for the clinical management of all patients in the ICU and HDU. This includes initial assessment, implementing treatment plans, performing emergency procedures, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. The role requires a professional with an MBChB degree, a valid KMPDC license, and at least three years of post-internship experience, with a strong preference for candidates with critical care experience. The successful candidate will be a key player in ensuring the highest level of care for critically ill patients.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical Review: Conduct daily clinical reviews of all patients in the ICU and HDU, whether they are hospital or private patients.
Patient Management: Initiate appropriate management for every new ICU/HDU patient before they are reviewed by a registrar or consultant.
Diagnostic Procedures: Perform procedures such as drawing blood for blood gas analysis and interpreting the results to take immediate action. This includes adjusting ventilator settings and correcting acid-base imbalances.
Emergency Interventions: Be prepared to perform emergency procedures, including intubation, emergency chest tube insertion for tension pneumothorax when a surgeon is not immediately available, and insertion of invasive pressure monitoring lines.
Collaboration & Communication: Communicate clinical information about patients to other specialists and colleagues. Accompany primary consultants and other specialists on their rounds within the unit.
Team Leadership: In the absence of a Registrar or Primary Consultant, serve as the team leader during any resuscitation in the unit.
Referral & Transport: Review patients in other hospital areas for potential ICU/HDU admission and make appropriate decisions on immediate interventions and transport requirements.
Quality Improvement & Training: Participate in quality improvement initiatives, prepare topics for Continuous Medical Education (CME), and assist in training nursing staff on various aspects of ICU/HDU patient management.
General Assistance: When available, assist with procedures like intravenous cannulation or phlebotomy in other wards if the ward doctor is unsuccessful.
Qualifications & Requirements
- MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery).
Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners & Dentist Council (KMPDC) with a valid current practicing license.
3 years of post-internship experience.
Critical Care experience is highly desirable.
Keen on detail with a high degree of accuracy.
Good communication skills.
