Job Summary
The Senior Medical Laboratory Officer will be responsible for supporting sample collection, performing routine and specialized laboratory investigations, ensuring proper documentation, maintaining laboratory equipment and safety, participating in quality assurance programs, and contributing to the efficient operation of the laboratory services within Migori County.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the collection of various samples, including those for CD4, VL, EID, HIV-DRT, Sputum Culture, Microscopy & Gene Xpert, blood counts, stool, and urine.
- Ensure that samples for referral are appropriately packaged and logged into tracking systems with complete laboratory requisition forms.
- Perform routine and specialized laboratory investigations, including TB Microscopy (FM/ZN), Gene Xpert, CD4, sCrAg, Biochemistry, and Hematology.
- Maintain proper documentation of samples received, tests performed, samples referred, results received, and promptly communicate critical results to clinicians.
- Keep laboratory equipment and the working area clean and ensure that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and in use.
- Participate in monitoring program quality indicators, such as Turnaround Time (TAT), rejections, expiry dates, stockouts, unsatisfactory test result performance, and client/patient complaints.
- Ensure that routine laboratory Internal Quality Control (IQC) is up to date and actively participate in inter-laboratory comparisons and External Quality Assurance (EQA).
- Perform Root Cause Analysis for unsatisfactory results and develop appropriate Corrective Action Plans.
- Ensure that safety procedures and access control to the laboratory are maintained.
- Support the laboratory in preparing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), job aids, and manuals.
- Work with the lab in-charge to ensure that phlebotomy and laboratory commodities/reagents are available to prevent test interruptions.
- Ensure the timely submission of weekly and monthly commodity consumption reports on relevant platforms (HCMP and DHIS).
- Ensure the timely submission of the monthly Lab Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) summary report to the Lab specialist.
- Submit monthly progress reports using the specified template.
Requirements for Appointment:
For appointment to this grade, an officer must have:
- Be a Kenyan citizen.
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science.
- Be registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) with a valid current practice license.
- Hold a Valid practicing license by the KLMTTB.
- Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Experience in using data analysis software packages such as SPSS and Epi Info will be an added advantage.
