Job Summary

The Brain & Mind Institute (BMI) at Aga Khan University is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to play a pivotal role in advancing knowledge and promoting mental well-being. This multifaceted role involves participant recruitment, conducting interviews and tests, managing data, and performing comprehensive data analysis and reporting. The Research Associate will also collaborate with various research stakeholders, contribute to the dissemination of project findings, and maintain research instrumentation. Furthermore, they will provide technical support to researchers, contribute to research project design, and have opportunities for independent research under mentorship.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in the design of innovative and impactful research projects.
  • Develop effective recruitment strategies to attract and engage eligible participants for various research studies.
  • Engage with potential participants through diverse channels, clearly explaining the research objectives and specific requirements of each study.
  • Screen potential participants meticulously against established eligibility criteria and ensure the thorough obtaining of informed consent.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate completion of all data collection tasks, adhering to research protocols.
  • Facilitate seamless coordination with Research Partners and Stakeholders, fostering effective collaborations.
  • Ensure the regular maintenance and accurate calibration of all research instrumentation, guaranteeing data reliability.
  • Provide effective technical support to researchers promptly addressing their specific needs and requirements throughout the research process.
  • In specific study delivery activities, the Research Associate may be required to serve as backup or cover for other project staff members, adapting to situational demands.
  • These initial responsibilities and deliverables are subject to potential evolution during the study's initiation, implementation, and close-out phases; therefore, other related responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
  • Collect, meticulously analyze, and accurately report research data using appropriate statistical methods and software.
  • Assist in the dissemination of project results through various channels, including presentations, publications, and community engagement activities.
  • Maintain detailed records related to field or laboratory research, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
  • Provide technical support to researchers in areas such as data management, statistical analysis, and research software.
  • Contribute to the design of research projects by offering insights and expertise based on experience and knowledge.
  • Independently conduct work that complements the overall research objectives, contributing to the broader research goals of the BMI.
  • Train and mentor other team members in research-related protocols, models, and the use of research instrumentation.
  • Have the opportunity to pursue independent research projects under the guidance and mentorship of experienced Principal Investigators, furthering the BMI's research objectives and goals.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as psychology, neuroscience, public health, or a related discipline. An advanced degree is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Additional certifications or coursework in research methods, data analysis, or relevant areas are preferred but not mandatory.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in research coordination, data collection, data analysis, and report writing.
  • Experience working in academic or research settings is preferred.
  • Familiarity with various research methodologies and statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R).
  • Proficiency in English and Swahili language skills (both written and spoken) is essential.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in data collection and analysis.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and also collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Effective communication skills, both in written and verbal forms, for interacting with team members and participants.
  • Adaptability and a strong willingness to learn new skills and methodologies as required by research projects.
  • Demonstrated ethical conduct and a strong commitment to adhering to research protocols and guidelines.
