Job Summary

Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi is seeking a meticulous and detail-oriented Pharmaceutical Technologist to join their Main Pharmacy department. The successful candidate will be responsible for accurately dispensing medications, verifying prescriptions, providing patient counseling, and ensuring compliance with pharmaceutical standards and procedures. This role requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a commitment to patient safety and well-being.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Receive and verify prescriptions for accuracy and completeness, ensuring timely dispensing of drugs within approved standards.
  • Immediately contact the physician for any inaccuracies or illegibility in prescription orders, meticulously document errors, and effectively communicate them to nursing and pharmacy staff.
  • Verify expiry dates of all drugs before dispensing medication to patients or customers, ensuring medication safety.
  • Check that every label placed on medications accurately contains the correct patient name, drug, quantity, and clear directions for use.
  • Compound extemporaneous preparations and accurately mix certain intravenous medications following established procedures and safety protocols.
  • Provide comprehensive counseling to patients on proper drug administration and the correct use of any necessary devices to promote optimum wellness and recovery.
  • Efficiently receive, return, and update drug credits on the pharmacy system in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Deliver drug discharges directly to patients in the ward when applicable, ensuring patient convenience and understanding.
  • Communicate out-of-stock and non-stock medications effectively and promptly to the prescribing physician and nursing staff, providing suitable alternative choices or making arrangements for urgent orders.
  • Strictly comply with and observe all environmental health and safety measures and regulations by ensuring proper handling, secure storage, and accurate dispensation of all medications.
  • Record, diligently monitor, and update the expiry list of medications in a timely manner to prevent the dispensing of outdated drugs.
  • Conduct thorough nursing floor inspections once a month for all ward stock, solutions, and any patient medication left behind, ensuring proper management and accountability.
  • Complete detailed documentation of Interventions, Medication errors and Near Misses, Adverse events, Medication queries, Patient complaints, or any other incidents and promptly forward them to the relevant office for review and action.
  • Perform random medication checks daily and diligently monitor variance levels in assigned satellite pharmacy locations.
  • Compile comprehensive daily satellite reports on dispensing activities and stock levels.
  • Carry out regular and accurate stock-take exercises in all assigned satellite pharmacy locations.
  • Report any special indicators as allocated, contributing to pharmacy performance monitoring.
  • Maintain and continuously update a personal drug knowledge database to ensure the accurate provision of pharmaceutical care for general disease states, as well as develop specialized knowledge in the assigned area of expertise.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized institution.
  • Must possess a valid Practicing License from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya.
  • Minimum of 1 year working experience in a busy healthcare facility, preferably a hospital setting.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency in relevant pharmacy software and applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with medical professionals, including physicians and nurses.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within a team comprising individuals from diverse backgrounds and training.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills and demonstrate empathy towards patients of all ages and conditions.
  • Exhibit good interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with patients and colleagues.
  • Must be culturally sensitive and able to interact respectfully with individuals from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to keeping up with pharmaceutical developments and actively participating in Continuous Medical Education (CME) programmes.
