Job Summary
Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi is seeking an experienced and dynamic Physician Manager to provide strong clinical leadership and ensure the highest standards of patient-centered care within the Adult Accident and Emergency Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring seamless, quality, and efficient emergency medicine care delivery, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement within the department.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide strong clinical leadership and expert guidance to all medical staff within the Accident and Emergency Department, ensuring the delivery of safe and high-quality patient care.
- Actively participate in the Recruitment, Orientation, Probation Reviews, and Disciplinary processes for Senior House Officers (SHOs) within the department.
- Assume direct responsibility for the Performance Management and Educational Development of all SHOs working in the Adult Accident and Emergency unit.
- Provide expert clinical care to patients presenting with a wide range of conditions, including first contact care, urgent medical needs, and critical emergencies.
- Ensure that all medical doctors within the department are duly licensed to practice and actively facilitate the privileging of doctors according to hospital policy.
- Rigorously ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory and accreditation standards, maintaining the hospital's commitment to quality.
- Actively participate in discussions with relevant members of the clinical care team to foster better integration of all patient care activities and enhance collaboration.
- Work closely with all members of the clinical care team to proactively identify and implement strategies to reduce medical errors and waste, improve overall skillfulness, and optimize resource utilization within the department.
- Initiate discussions with other consultants and colleagues across different specialties to enable the seamless integration of clinical key performance indicators, shared knowledge, institutional quality improvement initiatives, and ultimately enhance patient outcomes.
- Diligently monitor patient flow within the Accident and Emergency Department and implement effective strategies to reduce wait times while consistently maintaining the highest standards of care quality.
- Actively participate in the budget formulation process for the department and ensure diligent monitoring of budgetary performance throughout the fiscal year.
- Manage the departmental budget and resources efficiently, ensuring responsible allocation and utilization of all available assets.
- Champion and optimize the use of technological solutions to enhance both patient care delivery and administrative functions within the department.
- Ensure the consistent availability of all necessary medical supplies and essential equipment required for the effective functioning of the Accident and Emergency unit.
- Actively participate in scholarly activities, including engaging in relevant emergency medicine research to advance knowledge and best practices.
- Participate in the coordination of educational programs within the Accident and Emergency Department, involving medical residents and emergency medicine diplomates to foster continuous learning.
- Perform any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Chief Medical Officer or other senior management.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills Required:
- Master of Medicine in Family Medicine or its equivalent qualification.
- Diploma in Emergency Medicine.
- Minimum academic position of Senior Instructor.
- Demonstrated experience in a Healthcare Leadership Position, specifically as a Section Head in Emergency Medicine Departments.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and highly effective communication skills, both in written and verbal forms.
- Proven ability to independently prioritize work, demonstrate strong critical thinking, and possess excellent problem-solving skills.
- Ability to consistently maintain confidentiality of sensitive patient and hospital information.
- Demonstrated innovative thinking and strong managerial skills.
- Must be mature and command respect among professional colleagues and residents.
