Job Summary
Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, a private not-for-profit teaching hospital, is seeking a Pharmaceutical Technologist for its Main Pharmacy. The ideal candidate will be responsible for dispensing medications, ensuring prescription accuracy, monitoring drug inventory, and counseling patients to promote safe and effective medication use.
Duties & Responsibilities
Receive, verify prescriptions, and dispense drugs within approved standards and procedures.
Contact physicians for any prescription inaccuracies and document errors for communication.
Check expiry dates of drugs before dispensing and ensure proper labeling with patient details.
Prepare and compound extemporaneous and intravenous medications as per protocols.
Counsel patients on drug administration and proper use of medical devices.
Process drug returns and updates in the system promptly.
Deliver discharge medications to patients in the wards as necessary.
Communicate out-of-stock or non-stock medications to prescribers and nurses and suggest alternatives.
Maintain compliance with environmental health and safety regulations in drug handling and storage.
Conduct monthly nursing floor inspections for stock, solutions, and patient medications.
Record and monitor drug expiry dates and maintain an updated inventory list.
Document medication errors, interventions, adverse events, and patient complaints for reporting.
Perform daily random medication checks and monitor stock variance in assigned areas.
Compile and submit daily reports from satellite pharmacy operations.
Participate in regular stock-take exercises and ensure accurate inventory management.
Continuously update personal drug knowledge to enhance pharmaceutical care.

Qualifications & Requirements
Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized institution.
Valid Practicing License from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
Minimum 1-year experience in a busy healthcare facility, preferably a hospital.
Proficiency in computer applications.
Strong communication skills with medical professionals.
Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
Excellent customer service skills and patient empathy.
Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.
Willingness to engage in continuous medical education and stay updated on pharmaceutical advancements.
