Job Summary
The Sonographer is responsible for performing high-quality retinal imaging (fundoscopy) for pregnant women enrolled in the PEARLS MATRIX Study. The role focuses on accurate image acquisition, adherence to strict imaging protocols, and maintaining optimal data quality to support AI-assisted analysis. The incumbent must ensure patient comfort and data security while strictly complying with study protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
Duties & Responsibilities
Perform retinal imaging (fundoscopy) for study participants according to established protocols.
Ensure proper patient preparation, positioning, and comfort during all imaging procedures.
Maintain high-quality image acquisition standards, repeating poor-quality images to ensure diagnostic viability.
Manage the correct labeling, documentation, and secure transfer of retinal images to study databases.
Conduct basic quality checks of captured images before uploading them for research analysis.
Adhere to study SOPs, infection prevention protocols, and data security procedures.
Maintain and care for specialized fundoscopy equipment, ensuring prompt reporting of maintenance needs.
Coordinate with Research Midwives and clinical teams to integrate imaging into the busy ANC workflow.
Support efficient participant flow during imaging sessions.
Participate in study meetings, training, and refresher sessions as required.
Maintain strict participant confidentiality and comply with GCP standards.
Qualifications & Requirements
Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Sonography, Radiography, Ophthalmic Imaging, or an equivalent field.
Must possess a valid professional registration/license from a relevant regulatory body.
At least 2 years of experience in ultrasound, ophthalmic imaging, or retinal imaging (added advantage).
Prior experience in clinical research or maternal health studies is highly desirable.
Valid training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is an added advantage.
Strong attention to detail and a proven ability to produce high-quality diagnostic images.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for a clinical environment.
Ability to work effectively in a busy antenatal clinic setting.
