Job Summary

The Community Oral Health Officer (COHO) is responsible for providing preventive, promotive, and basic curative oral health services. This role involves diagnosing and managing common dental conditions, performing essential procedures like extractions and fillings, and leading community awareness initiatives. The incumbent must ensure strict adherence to Ministry of Health guidelines and infection control standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Examine, diagnose, and manage common oral and dental conditions for patients of all ages.

  • Perform clinical dental procedures including tooth extractions, scaling, polishing, and dental fillings.

  • Apply temporary dressings and perform oral prophylaxis to prevent tooth decay.

  • Educate patients and local communities on proper oral hygiene and preventive dental practices.

  • Lead and participate in community outreach and oral health awareness programs.

  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate patient treatment records and documentation.

  • Prepare, sterilize, and maintain dental instruments and high-tech equipment.

  • Oversee infection prevention and control (IPC) measures within the dental unit.

  • Monitor dental inventory and report supply needs to hospital management promptly.

  • Refer complex dental cases to specialized Dental Surgeons or higher-level facilities when necessary.

  • Stay updated with Ministry of Health oral health policies and professional standards.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Diploma in Community Oral Health from a recognized medical training institution.

  • Must be Registered and licensed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).

  • Possession of a valid practicing license for the current year.

  • Minimum of 2–3 years of working experience in a reputable healthcare facility.

  • Valid certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS) is considered a strong added advantage.

  • Excellent clinical, diagnostic, and manual dexterity skills.

  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and customer service skills.

  • Proficiency in infection prevention and control procedures.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced clinic.
