Job Purpose
The Renal Nurse delivers safe, effective, and specialized nursing care by managing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients. The role ensures clinical stability, adherence to infection prevention protocols, and optimal patient outcomes, aligning with the hospital's strategic goals of quality care and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Dialysis Care & Clinical Management: Prepare, initiate, monitor, and complete dialysis sessions in accordance with prescribed treatment plans and clinical protocols.
Patient Monitoring: Ensure continuous monitoring of patient vitals before, during, and after dialysis; promptly manage complications such as hypotension or disequilibrium syndrome.
Equipment Operation: Ensure the proper operation, troubleshooting, and safe use of dialysis machines and related medical equipment.
Infection Prevention & Control (IPC): Adhere strictly to IPC protocols during dialysis procedures and vascular access handling to minimize infection risks.
Patient Education & Counseling: Educate patients and families on renal disease management, dietary restrictions, fluid control, and medication adherence.
Clinical Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely documentation of dialysis sessions, patient progress, and treatment outcomes.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Coordinate with nephrologists and healthcare professionals to provide holistic renal care.
Quality Improvement: Participate in renal audits and quality improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery.
Consumables Management: Handle and account for dialysis consumables and equipment to maintain availability and prevent wastage.

Qualifications & Requirements
Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (KRCHN / BScN).
Post-basic training or certification in Renal Nursing / Dialysis Nursing (Mandatory).
Valid Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) practicing license.
Minimum 2–3 years’ experience specifically in a dialysis or renal unit.
Valid ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) and BLS (Basic Life Support) certifications.
Proficiency in operating dialysis machines and managing vascular access.
High attention to detail and clinical vigilance regarding patient stability.
Strong communication skills for effective patient education and counseling.
