Job Summary
The Maternity Nurse is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of comprehensive Maternal and Neonatal Care within IRC-supported health facilities. This role spans the entire continuum of care, including Antenatal Care (ANC), labor and delivery management, and postnatal monitoring. The incumbent must utilize strong clinical judgment to identify obstetric complications early, stabilize patients, coordinate internal or external referrals, and maintain meticulous compliance with health regulations and electronic reporting systems.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Maternal & Perinatal Care: Deliver top-tier nursing care during admission, hospital stay, and discharge; perform daily assessments to catch complications early.
Labor & Delivery Management: Monitor labor progress utilizing a partograph or modern Labour Care Guide; safely conduct normal vaginal deliveries, perform Active Management of the Third Stage of Labor (AMTSL), and execute neonatal resuscitation.
Antenatal & Postnatal Care: Monitor maternal/fetal vitals, interpret diagnostic tests, provide health education, assess uterine involution/lochia, and counsel on postpartum family planning.
Emergency & Referral Logistics: Identify obstetric or neonatal emergencies immediately; stabilize patients, utilize SBAR communication formats for handovers, and accompany critical cases during transit.
Documentation & Reporting: Maintain complete clinical records and patient charts within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, including mandatory Ministry of Health statutory reports.
Systems & Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols, participate in Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) audits, and verify emergency crash carts daily.
Leadership & Operations: Lead ward shifts, cover emergency calls, participate in doctors' rounds, manage departmental equipment inventory, and facilitate Continuous Medical Education (CME) sessions.
Qualifications & Requirements
Diploma or Degree in Nursing (KRCHN or KRM) from an accredited Nursing Training Institution.
Must be Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) with a valid, up-to-date practicing license.
Minimum of two (2) years of continuous clinical experience in a busy maternity ward or specialized facility.
Possession of an active Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) training certificate (Key Skill).
Fluent verbal and written communication skills with mandatory proficiency in the SBAR handover protocol.
Strong knowledge of equipment tracking, instrument processing, and professional accountability.
High ethical standards with strict adherence to patient data non-disclosure and confidentiality.
