Job Summary

The Team Leader - NICU & Nursery will assist the Head of Department in managing neonatal and newborn care services. The successful candidate will supervise staff, coordinate daily operations, ensure adherence to care protocols, and monitor the well-being of critically ill and well newborns. This position requires a compassionate professional with a strong clinical background and a minimum of five years of experience in neonatal/maternity care, with at least two years in a supervisory role.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head of Department (HOD) in managing NICU and Nursery operations.

  • Provide day-to-day supervision, mentorship, and support to neonatal nurses and staff.

  • Coordinate staff scheduling, allocation of duties, and workload management.

  • Ensure strict adherence to neonatal care protocols, infection prevention, and patient safety standards.

  • Monitor neonates in both the NICU and the well-baby nursery, ensuring accurate documentation and reporting.

  • Support family-centered care by educating and involving parents in newborn care.

  • Oversee equipment use, stock management, and consumables for neonatal units.

  • Serve as a point of escalation for urgent patient care concerns.

  • Participate in departmental audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.



Qualifications & Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSCN) or a Diploma in Nursing with additional training in Neonatal Nursing.

  • A valid registration and practicing license with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in neonatal/maternity care, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role

  • Prior experience in a NICU or newborn nursery is essential.

  • Strong clinical expertise in neonatal and newborn care.

  • Excellent leadership and supervisory skills.

  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Compassionate, patient, and family-focused approach to care.

  • The ability to work under pressure in high-acuity settings.

  • Flexibility to work shifts, nights, weekends, and public holidays.
