Job Summary
The Head of Department - ICU/HDU will provide strategic and clinical leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality critical care services. The role involves developing and implementing departmental policies, overseeing patient care, supervising staff, and driving quality improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing, postgraduate training in a relevant field, and a minimum of 5-7 years of clinical experience in an ICU/HDU setting.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provide overall leadership and management of the ICU/HDU services.
Develop and implement departmental policies, protocols, and quality standards.
Oversee patient care and ensure adherence to evidence-based critical care practices.
Supervise, mentor, and evaluate ICU/HDU staff, including doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.
Coordinate staff scheduling, workload management, and training needs.
Ensure the efficient use of resources, equipment, and consumables in critical care units.
Monitor patient safety indicators, infection control, and clinical outcomes.
Lead quality improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery.
Collaborate with hospital leadership and multidisciplinary teams for seamless care.
Lead morbidity and mortality reviews, audits, and departmental meetings.
Support continuous professional development and promote a culture of excellence and teamwork.
Qualifications & Requirements
A Bachelor's of Science in Nursing.
Postgraduate training in Anaesthesia, Critical Care Medicine, or a specialization in ICU care.
A valid registration and practicing license with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) or Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
A minimum of 5-7 years' clinical experience in an ICU/HDU, with at least 1-2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
Mandatory valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certificates.
Skills & Competencies
Strong leadership, management, and mentoring skills.
Excellent clinical decision-making and critical care expertise.
Knowledge of ICU/HDU protocols, infection prevention, and advanced life support.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective team coordination.
