Job Summary

The Perioperative Nurse will be a key member of the surgical team, responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients before, during, and after surgery. The role involves developing individualized care plans, monitoring patient conditions, ensuring a sterile and safe operating room environment, and collaborating with surgeons and other medical staff. The ideal candidate is a compassionate, mid-level professional with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement individualized plans of care for patients, in collaboration with the surgical team.

  • Perform appropriate treatments as ordered by physicians in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Work with patients pre-operatively to complete paperwork, address concerns, and calm fears.

  • Monitor patients' conditions during and after surgery, managing the overall nursing care in the operating room.

  • Clean and sterilize surgical equipment and operating rooms to maintain a sterile environment.

  • Serve as a circulating nurse, stocking the operating room with supplies and assisting the surgical team.

  • Function as a scrub nurse, preparing necessary instruments and anticipating the surgeon’s needs during procedures.

  • Provide individualized patient and family education and discharge planning.

  • Document patient assessment findings, interventions, and progress toward problem resolution.

  • Initiate emergency resuscitative measures as needed, following basic and advanced life support protocols.

  • Provide care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to the patient’s and family’s diversity.

  • Ensure all necessary supplies for surgical procedures are available.

  • Maintain current competency in perioperative nursing through continuing education.

  • Serve as a safeguarding champion in accordance with hospital policies.

  • Ensure personal and coworker safety through the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adherence to work instructions.

  • Be responsible for ensuring compliance with all requirements of the current quality system (SafeCare).


Qualifications & Requirements

  • Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.

  • Registration and a valid practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).

  • At least 3 years of clinical experience in a perioperative setting (Operating Theatre/Room).

  • Proven experience as a circulating nurse and/or a scrub nurse.

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification is a must.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and patient-family education skills.

  • Strong ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

  • A compassionate and non-judgmental approach to patient care.

  • Commitment to Christian values, integrity, and ethical conduct.

  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate medical records and documentation.

  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
