Job Summary

The Theatre Nurse will be responsible for upholding operating room standards by implementing and enforcing policies and procedures that contribute to patient safety and positive physiological and behavioral responses. This role involves planning and supervising nursing care within the operating theatre, ensuring proper functioning of equipment, maintaining sterility and infection control, and participating in training and coordination of theatre activities in Garissa.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Safety and Response: Ensure operating room standards are upheld by implementing and enforcing policies and procedures contributing to patient safety, good physiological, and behavioral responses.
  • Nursing Care Planning and Implementation: Plan nursing care activities, oversee their implementation, and provide supervision within the operating theatre.
  • Documentation: Accurately document all nursing activities carried out in the operating room.
  • Equipment Functionality: Ensure the proper functioning of instruments, equipment, and machines for use within the operating theatre.
  • Instrument Tray Review: Periodically review instrument trays for appropriateness and completeness.
  • Material Use: Promote the proper and efficient use of materials and items within the theatre.
  • Sterility Maintenance: Uphold strict standards for the maintenance of sterility during surgical procedures.
  • Infection Prevention and Control (IPC):
    • Ensure IPC guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are provided and adhered to in the units.
    • Provide sterile equipment and consumables in operating theatres.
    • Ensure the availability of facilities for hand hygiene.
    • Ensure proper waste management according to established protocols.
    • Ensure aseptic techniques are consistently practiced in operating theatres.
  • Training and Capacity Building:
    • Conduct Continuous Medical Education (CMEs) for health staff on IPC and basic perioperative SOPs.
    • Train Auxiliary Nurses on basic perioperative management and general Nursing while in Theatre.
    • Participate in weekly program CMEs and Clinical audits.
  • Coordination and Collaboration:
    • Coordinate theatre activities and work collaboratively with other health departments.
    • Ensure theatre schedules and patient lists are completed by availing all required items.
    • Ensure timely ordering of supplies, both pharmaceuticals and non-pharmaceuticals.
    • Coordinate routine fumigation of the operating room with the community/Public health program.
    • Ensure routine servicing of machines and equipment by the medical engineering department.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation:
    • Compile weekly and monthly reports and submit them to the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) department.
  • Human Resources:
    • Collaborate with the departmental in-charge to plan coverage for support staff.
    • Participate in the performance management of support staff in the theatre.
    • Participate in the recruitment, onboarding, and training of departmental staff, including support staff.
  • Client Feedback and Responsiveness:
    • Information Sharing: Regularly share and discuss timely, accurate, and relevant information with communities about access and eligibility to services, expected staff behavior, community feedback mechanisms, safeguarding mechanisms, and how to use them.
    • Feedback Collection and Reporting: Promote formal feedback mechanisms to capture, monitor, respond to, and act on feedback and complaints from communities by documenting feedback received through informal interactions, observations, and focus group discussions. Report community needs, preferences, and feedback to managers and client responsiveness focal persons.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Registered Community Health Nursing.
  • Registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Possess a valid practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Should have served as a registered nurse for a minimum period of 2 years.
