Responsibilities/Main Duties:
Programming:
- Implement comprehensive Maternal and newborn care activities for mothers throughout the antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods within the maternity ward.
- Adhere strictly to minimum National guidelines and standard admission procedures and protocols for all patients admitted to Maternity.
- Practice Respectful Maternity Care for all patients and their relatives admitted to the maternity unit, ensuring dignity and comfort.
- Perform basic and assisted delivery care in the labor ward, consistently observing high-level Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures.
- Initiate the mandatory use of the partograph for all mothers admitted and in established labor to meticulously monitor the progress of both fetal and maternal conditions, enabling early detection of abnormal labor progression.
- Provide comprehensive newborn care and effectively manage complications immediately after delivery, as well as provide follow-up care for critically ill newborns.
- Proficiently perform all signal functions of Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EMoNC) as per the national guidelines.
- Actively participate in daily Doctor’s ward rounds to gain familiarity with patient care and clinical management for a seamless continuum of care.
- Promptly refer relevant information, such as MEOWS scores, patient status updates, and laboratory results, to the doctor in charge or the on-call physician to facilitate informed clinical management decisions.
- Proactively promote patients’ comfort by performing essential nursing duties in the ward, including but not limited to ensuring daily bedmaking, daily dump dusting, and regular ward deep cleaning.
- Ensure emergency preparedness trays and equipment inventory are consistently in place in maternity, with items diligently monitored and updated daily through structured handovers during every shift.
- Effectively stabilize emergency obstetric and neonatal complications prior to referral and ensure timely supported referrals to the nearest Emergency Obstetric Care center for a higher level of care.
- Accompany patients during referral when necessary and facilitate the acquisition of legal travel documents as required.
- Provide hospital coverage and participate in on-call duties as needed.
- Strictly adhere to IPC procedures within the clinical area, including proper handling and treatment of instruments after use, meticulous segregation and disposal of medical waste, and the consistent use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) by care providers and subordinate staff for infection prevention.
Reporting/Communication:
- Assume responsibility for compiling accurate daily Nursing care activity reports during shift handovers.
- Maintain accurate record-keeping, ensure proper ordering, and uphold accountability for equipment and supplies.
- Regularly attend ward meetings, monthly hospital meetings, and actively participate in or facilitate Continuous Medical Education sessions.
- Ensure that all admissions, discharges, transfers, and deaths are promptly and accurately documented and recorded as they occur, and actively participate in respective mortality audits.
- Report any significant changes in clinical operations to the supervisor in a timely manner.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Operations:
- Maintain all departmental equipment, including suction machines, resuscitators, and various procedure sets, ensuring they are consistently in good working condition, and submit regular inventory reports for the same.
- Report any significant changes in operations to the head nurse promptly.
Systems Compliance and Improvement:
- Ensure strict adherence to IRC-Kenya program-specific finance, logistics, IT, security, communications, and human resource/administration policies and procedures.
- Comply fully with any new procedures and guidelines designated in circulation from the Senior Management Team (SMT) and/or Field team Management.
Confidentiality:
- Maintain the strict nondisclosure of any information whatsoever relating to the practices and business of IRC acquired during the course of duty to any other person or organization without proper authorization, except in the normal execution of assigned duties.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN) or Kenya Registered Midwife (KRM) from a recognized Nursing Training Institution.
- Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya with a valid practicing license.
- More than 2 years of clinical maternity ward experience in a busy facility.

- Previous work experience in a limited resource setting is an added advantage.
- Ability to speak the local language will be an added advantage.
