Job Summary

A contract opportunity exists for a dedicated Research Assistant at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in Rachuonyo. This role is crucial for supporting a study focused on HIV testing and intervention strategies within the local community. The successful candidate will be responsible for direct participant engagement, including screening, recruitment, and providing HIV testing services according to national guidelines, as well as accurate data collection and adherence to research protocols.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the study design and objectives to effectively contribute to the successful implementation of all research-related activities within the Rachuonyo site.

  • Proactively screen, recruit, and obtain informed consent from eligible study participants within the Rachuonyo community, adhering to ethical guidelines and ensuring their understanding of the study.

  • Competently offer HIV testing services to study participants within the clinic setting in Rachuonyo, strictly following the Ministry of Health (MOH) testing algorithm and providing necessary pre- and post-test counseling.

  • Deliver study interventions accurately and consistently, both at the time of participant enrollment and through subsequent SMS messaging as outlined in the research protocol for the Rachuonyo study.

  • Implement study questionnaires and standard operating procedures (SOPs) meticulously during data collection in Rachuonyo to maintain the integrity and accuracy of the research data.

  • Diligently follow up with study participants in Rachuonyo to schedule and conduct retesting appointments at the intervals specified by the research design, ensuring high participant retention within the local community.

  • Conduct thorough participant endpoint ascertainment according to the study's guidelines and provide necessary support and training to facility staff in Rachuonyo on specific study requirements and data collection procedures.

  • Serve as a key point of contact for study participants in Rachuonyo, providing them with accurate information, addressing their queries, and offering ongoing support throughout their involvement in the research study.

  • Maintain clear, consistent, and timely communication with the Study Coordinator and other Heads of Departments (HODs) regarding the progress of the Rachuonyo arm of the study, recruitment targets, and any challenges encountered during field activities.

  • Ensure strict compliance with the study protocol and all relevant ethical and regulatory procedures to uphold the highest standards of research conduct and data integrity within the Rachuonyo context.

  • Guarantee the accurate and timely reporting of HIV testing progress and other relevant data from the Rachuonyo site in accordance with the specifications of the study protocol and reporting timelines.

  • Consistently work in a highly professional and ethical manner within the Rachuonyo community, demonstrating competence, accountability, and unwavering integrity in all assigned research tasks and interactions with participants and colleagues.

  • Undertake any other relevant duties as assigned by the Study Coordinator to facilitate the successful execution of the research project within the Rachuonyo region and contribute to its overall goals.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Must possess a Diploma in Social Sciences, Public Health, Counselling, Community Development, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer skills, including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
  • Must exhibit keen attention to detail and possess a strong ability to follow instructions and established research procedures accurately and consistently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential for effective interaction with study participants and the research team in Rachuonyo.
  • Must be non-judgmental and demonstrate the ability to interact respectfully and professionally with individuals from diverse backgrounds and circumstances within the local community.
  • Prior knowledge and experience in the provision of HTS (HIV Testing Services) and adherence to testing protocols is a desired qualification for this role.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills, be adaptable to varying field conditions in Rachuonyo, and demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Training on the current national HIV testing algorithm will be considered an added advantage for candidates.
  • The ability to ride a motorbike and possession of a valid riding license will be considered an added advantage, particularly for facilitating field-based data collection and participant follow-up activities within the Rachuonyo region.
