Job Summary
The Registered Nurse I (Anesthetist) will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing interventions related to the care of patients undergoing anesthesia. This includes diagnosing common health conditions, providing appropriate healthcare services, offering health education and counseling, making appropriate referrals, facilitating admissions and discharges, maintaining patient records, ensuring a safe clinical environment, collecting data for research, evaluating healthcare outcomes, conducting school health needs assessments, planning and implementing interventions for schools, and identifying occupational health needs. Their primary focus will be on the specialized aspects of anesthetic nursing.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing interventions specifically for patients undergoing anesthesia, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the perioperative period.
- Diagnosing common health conditions and understanding their implications for anesthetic management, providing appropriate initial care or escalating as necessary.
- Providing appropriate healthcare services with a focus on pre-operative assessment, intra-operative monitoring, and post-operative care related to anesthesia.
- Providing health education and counseling to patients/clients and the community on aspects of anesthesia and pain management.
- Referring patients and clients appropriately to anesthesiologists or other specialists when complex anesthetic management is required.
- Facilitating patients' admission to the surgical or anesthetic care areas and initiating discharge plans with a focus on post-anesthetic recovery.
- Maintaining accurate and detailed records on patients’/clients’ health condition and the specific anesthetic care provided.
- Ensuring a tidy and safe clinical environment within the operating theater and recovery areas, adhering to anesthetic safety protocols.
- Collecting and collating data for research related to anesthetic nursing practices and patient outcomes.
- Evaluating healthcare outcomes on patients undergoing anesthesia and preparing individualized reports on their recovery and any anesthetic-related complications.
- Conducting assessment of schools’ health needs, which may include education on pain management or awareness related to surgical procedures.
- Planning and implementing interventions based on school health needs assessments, potentially including education on safe practices, and preparing periodic reports.
- Identifying occupational health needs that may be relevant to individuals undergoing anesthesia or working in related fields and making appropriate recommendations.
Qualifications & Requirements
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
- A Diploma in any of the following disciplines from a recognized institution: Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing, Kenya Registered Nursing, Kenya Registered Midwifery, Kenya Registered Nursing/ Kenya Registered Midwifery, or Kenya Registered Nursing/Mental Health and Psychiatry qualification.
- A Higher Diploma in Registered Anaesthetic Nursing.
- A Registration Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya as a Registered Nurse Anaesthetist.
- A Valid Practicing License from the Nursing Council of Kenya as a Registered Nurse Anaesthetist.
- A Certificate in Computer Application skills from a recognized institution.
