Overall Responsibility
The Oncology Nurse will be responsible for providing specialized nursing care to patients undergoing cancer diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. This includes chemotherapy administration, symptoms management, emotional support, and ensuring continuity of care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other cancer treatments accurately and safely as prescribed by the medical team.
- Monitor patients closely for adverse reactions during and after treatment administration, taking prompt and appropriate action as necessary according to established protocols.
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments and meticulously document vital signs, symptoms, and progress in patient records.
- Assist effectively in managing the various side effects associated with cancer treatments, providing comfort and support to patients.
- Educate patients and their families thoroughly about their treatment plans, medications, nutrition guidelines, and essential self-care strategies.
- Offer empathetic psychological support to patients and facilitate referrals for professional counseling to help them cope with their diagnosis and treatment journey.
- Collaborate effectively with oncologists, pharmacists, laboratory staff, and other multidisciplinary team members in the comprehensive planning of patient treatment.
- Schedule and diligently follow up on diagnostic tests, treatment appointments, and necessary referrals to ensure seamless continuity of care.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records and communicate any significant changes in patient condition to the medical team promptly and clearly.
- Observe and strictly enforce all infection prevention and control protocols to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Higher Diploma in Oncology Nursing is highly desirable.
- Valid nursing practice license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in a busy clinical setting; experience in an oncology unit is a significant added advantage.
- Training in chemotherapy administration and the safe handling of hazardous drugs is a valuable asset.
