Overall Responsibility
The Palliative Care Specialist will be responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients with life-limiting illnesses by addressing their physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs. The primary focus of this role is on improving quality of life, alleviating suffering, and providing support to patients and their families throughout serious illness and during end-of-life care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess and manage pain and other distressing symptoms such as nausea, breathlessness, anxiety, and fatigue in patients facing serious or terminal illnesses, utilizing evidence-based approaches.
- Develop and implement individualized care plans in close collaboration with patients, their families, and the multidisciplinary healthcare team, ensuring patient-centered goals.
- Provide compassionate end-of-life care and skillfully guide patients and their families in decision-making processes that are aligned with their values, beliefs, and goals.
- Facilitate advanced care planning discussions and ensure that critical directives such as Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders are respected, clearly documented, and effectively implemented.
- Offer comprehensive emotional and psychological support to both patients and their caregivers who are navigating the challenges of life-limiting conditions, promoting coping and well-being.
- Conduct sensitive and informative family meetings to openly discuss prognosis, establish realistic treatment goals, and understand and respect patient and family care preferences.
- Educate patients and their families thoroughly on disease progression, effective symptom management strategies, and the various available care options to empower informed decision-making.
- Work collaboratively and closely with physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and psychologists to ensure the delivery of holistic and integrated palliative care services.
- Coordinate home-based palliative care services when appropriate and feasible, and facilitate seamless and well-supported transitions of care across different settings.
- Provide essential training and mentorship to other healthcare professionals on the fundamental principles and best practices of palliative care to build capacity within the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or an equivalent medical degree.
- Possession of a postgraduate qualification or certification in Palliative Care from a recognized institution.
- A minimum of 3 years of clinical experience, with at least 1 year specifically in palliative care.
- A valid practicing license from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
