Overall Responsibility

The Clinical Officer-Oncology will play a crucial role in supporting the diagnosis, planning, and administration of cancer treatments while closely monitoring patient progress throughout their oncology journey.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough and detailed medical histories and physical examinations with a specific focus on oncology cases to gather essential patient information.
  • Assist proficiently in performing various diagnostic procedures, such as biopsies, and in the interpretation of complex imaging studies, working in close collaboration with the Medical Oncologist.
  • Accurately stage cancer and develop comprehensive initial assessments to effectively aid in the formulation of individualized treatment plans.
  • Administer crucial chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other oncology treatments precisely according to established protocols and under the direct supervision of the Medical Oncologist.
  • Diligently monitor patient treatment responses and any potential side effects, and make necessary adjustments to treatment regimens in close consultation with the Medical Oncologist.
  • Offer comprehensive and empathetic education to patients and their families regarding their specific cancer diagnosis, available treatment options, and what to expect throughout the entire treatment process.
  • Provide guidance and support to patients in developing effective coping mechanisms and accessing psychosocial support to help manage the emotional stress associated with a cancer diagnosis and its treatment.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans, ensuring timely scheduling of follow-up appointments, necessary laboratory tests, and imaging procedures to accurately track patient progress.
  • Coordinate seamless referrals for specialized care or advanced diagnostic tests as clinically required to ensure comprehensive patient management.
  • Collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team, including oncology nurses, pharmacists, palliative care teams, surgeons, oncologists, and radiologists, to optimize all aspects of patient care.
  • Assist actively in the management of patients receiving palliative care, focusing on enhancing their quality of life through effective symptom control and supportive measures.
  • Participate in important public health awareness campaigns and outreach programs aimed at sensitizing communities on critical cancer-related issues.
  • Support valuable research initiatives and clinical trials related to innovative cancer treatments to contribute to advancements in the field.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Clinical Medicine and Surgery.
  • Higher National Diploma in Clinical Oncology and Palliative Care.
  • Valid Practicing License from the Clinical Officers’ Council of Kenya.
