Job Summary
The Medical Physicist will be responsible for applying principles and methodologies of physics to medicine, with a primary focus on ensuring the safe and effective use of ionizing radiation in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, particularly cancer. This includes treatment planning, dosimetry, quality assurance, and providing training to other healthcare professionals within the radiotherapy center and related departments in a busy hospital setting in Nakuru County.
Duties & Responsibilities
- To train and supervise junior Medical Physicists, contributing to the development of expertise within the department.
- To teach Radiological workers (including radiographers and other staff) on the safe and effective uses of ionizing radiation in medical imaging and therapy.
- Performing treatment planning of cancer patients, ensuring accurate radiation dose delivery to the tumor while minimizing exposure to healthy tissues.
- Conducting Radiation Dosimetry, which involves the measurement and calculation of radiation doses for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
- Implementing and overseeing QA/QC (Quality Assurance/Quality Control) programs in Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine, and Diagnostic Radiology to ensure the accuracy and reliability of equipment and procedures.
- Participating in Brachytherapy procedures, which involve the placement of radioactive sources inside the body to treat cancer.
- Supervise both diagnostic and therapy radiographers in the accurate and safe treatment of cancer patients according to the prescribed plans.
- Administer radioactive drugs to patients for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes based on the prescription of the radiotherapist, radiologists, and Nuclear Medicine specialist.
- Conducting Radiation Dosimetry for various applications within medical imaging and therapy.
- Providing radiation oncology physics and radiation dosimeter training for medical practitioners and other health care staff to enhance their understanding and safe handling of radiation.
- Maintaining personal professional competency through self-study, attendance at scientific meetings, and participation in internal training programs to stay updated with the latest advancements in the field.
Qualifications & Requirements
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
- A Bachelor of Science in Physics with post-graduate training in medical physics.
- Possess a Master’s degree in Medical Physics with clinical training in radiotherapy physics from a recognized university.
- A Certificate in Computer Application skills from recognized institutions.
- Three years’ experience working as a Medical Physicist in a busy Radiotherapy Center at a busy Hospital.
