Key Responsibilities

Program Management:

  • Ensure all patients receive timely and appropriate daily medical attention within the hospital wards.
  • Oversee the effective functioning of the hospital across all wards, ensuring smooth operations.
  • Attend to all medical and surgical emergencies promptly and efficiently.
  • Manage and supervise all medical staff within respective wards, providing leadership and guidance.
  • Ensure accurate and comprehensive documentation of patient care in patient files.
  • Conduct thorough daily ward rounds in all relevant wards, including maternity, adult, pediatrics, stabilization center, and isolation wards.
  • Implement quality control measures by verifying that case management adheres strictly to established protocols and guidelines.
  • Ensure that departmental needs are accurately documented and submitted to the Medical Officer in Charge (MOIC) for budgeting purposes.
  • Provide regular weekly updates on the ward status, identifying trends and needs, and proposing mitigation measures for anticipated surges.
  • Implement performance management strategies for the department by setting clear targets and implementing activities to achieve them.
  • Effectively manage and escalate any issues that arise from the departments to the appropriate channels.
  • Competently carry out all elective and emergency obstetric/Gynecological cases in the operating theatre.
  • Competently conduct all elective and emergency surgical cases in the operating theatre.
  • Conduct specialized medical clinics within the hospital on a weekly basis, including SOPC, GOPC, HRC, MOPC, and POPC.
  • Attend to all medical-legal cases, including the accurate filling of P3 forms and attendance at court sessions as deemed necessary.
  • Ensure that survivors of sexual assault cases receive prompt and appropriate care within the GBV center.
  • Ensure all referrals, both emergency and elective, to secondary and tertiary care centers are completed promptly and efficiently.

Human Resource:

  • Serve as an effective team leader within the hospital, providing guidance and direction in patient care.
  • Supervise the nursing in-charge of the department, fostering a collaborative working environment.
  • Develop and manage leave plans and duty rotas for all staff within the department, ensuring adequate coverage.
  • Manage disciplinary cases arising from the departments with the support of the Nursing Officer in Charge (NOIC), HR department, and hospital management.
  • Attend clinical staff meetings regularly and provide program updates as required.
  • Manage the Clinical Services Program in an acting capacity when the Health Manager is out of office.
  • Coordinate and actively participate in Continuous Medical Education (CME) sessions for staff, providing updates on patient care best practices.

Program Activities:

  • Conduct thorough daily ward rounds in all respective wards.
  • Serve as the doctor on call on a weekly basis, providing 24/7 medical coverage.
  • Carry out all emergency surgical and obstetric cases in the operating theatre.
  • Conduct all specialized medical clinics on a weekly basis, including SOPC, GOPC, HRC, POPC, and MOPC.
  • Accurately and comprehensively document patient diagnoses, treatment plans, and care provided in patient files.
  • Attend morning handover meetings regularly and provide crucial feedback on patient care.
  • Carry out all elective surgical and gynecological cases efficiently.
  • Attend to all medical-legal issues, accurately fill P3 forms, and attend court sessions as required.
  • Lead in timely death audits within the department, ensuring action points are documented and followed up effectively.
  • Head the quality improvement team for the department and ensure that all action plans are completed and implemented.
  • Accurately complete referral forms for both emergency and elective referrals.

Reporting and Coordination:

  • Information Sharing: Regularly share and discuss timely, accurate, and relevant information with communities about access and eligibility to services, expected staff behavior, community feedback mechanisms, safeguarding mechanisms, and how to use them.
  • Feedback Collection and Reporting: Promote the formal feedback mechanisms to capture, monitor, respond to, and act on feedback and complaints from communities by documenting feedback received through informal interactions, observations, and focus group discussions. Report community needs, preferences, and feedback to managers and client responsiveness focal persons.

Other:

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) degree.
  • Full registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
  • Minimum of 2 years of working experience in a busy hospital environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.

Required Experience & Competencies:

  • Must be flexible, a strong team player, and highly results-oriented.
  • Must be ready and willing to work in challenging and multitasking environments.
  • Computer literacy in MS Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is highly desired.
