The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), a leading health research institution in Kenya, is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of communities through impactful research. The Economic Advantages of Readers for Near Vision (EARN Trial), a significant research project based in Kisii County, aims to evaluate the impact of providing near-vision glasses to working-age individuals with presbyopia. We are seeking multiple motivated and detail-oriented Field Assistants (Data Collection) to play a crucial role in collecting high-quality data for this important trial in Kisii.

Job Summary

The Field Assistants (Data Collection) will be responsible for obtaining informed consent from study participants, administering household survey questionnaires accurately, adhering to study protocols and ethical standards, and maintaining open communication with participants and the research team. This role is crucial for the successful collection of data for the EARN Trial.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Obtain informed consent from potential study participants thoroughly and ethically before they are enrolled in the study.
  • Administer the household survey questionnaire accurately and diligently, ensuring that all data is recorded without any bias or errors.
  • Adhere strictly to the study protocol, including consistently maintaining high ethical standards such as ensuring participant confidentiality, demonstrating respect for all participants, and following all regulatory guidelines.   
  • Maintain open and effective communication with study participants to address any questions, concerns, or clarifications they may have throughout their involvement in the research.
  • Actively participate in daily debrief meetings with the Field Supervisor to discuss progress, challenges, and ensure consistency in data collection.
  • Ensure the safety and responsible handling of all study tools, questionnaires, and equipment provided for data collection.
  • Promptly communicate any challenges, irregularities, or issues encountered in the field during data collection to the research team to facilitate timely resolution.   
  • Assist the research team in other project-related activities as required to support the overall success of the EARN Trial.   

Vacancy Requirements:

  • A minimum of KCSE certificate or an equivalent qualification recognized in Kenya.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and interpersonal, to effectively interact with community members and the research team.   
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage assigned tasks responsibly in the field.
  • Previous experience in collecting quantitative data through surveys or similar methods is essential.
  • Basic knowledge of research ethics and good clinical practice principles.
  • Willingness to live in Kisii County for the duration of the contract and be able to undertake extensive travel within the study area to reach participants.   

Desirable qualities

  • Good communication and reporting skills to provide clear updates to the supervisor.   
  • Effective problem-solving skills to address challenges encountered during data collection.   
  • Experience in community engagement and outreach activities.
  • Knowledge of Smartphone-based data collection applications will be a significant added advantage for efficient data recording.
