Job Summary

As a Community Oral Health Officer (COHO) at Penda Health, you will be instrumental in promoting oral health by providing essential dental services, educating patients on proper oral hygiene practices, and providing crucial support to the dentist with diagnostic and preventive care measures. Your role is key to preventing dental diseases and ensuring that our patients achieve and maintain optimal oral health, contributing significantly to their overall well-being.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough dental examinations and provide effective treatment for common oral health conditions by delivering essential oral hygiene dental services and offering comprehensive support to the dentist in diagnostic and preventive care measures.
  • Develop and implement impactful oral health education initiatives specifically targeted at patients, with a strong emphasis on preventive care strategies and best practices in oral hygiene.
  • Collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals within Penda Health to seamlessly integrate oral health considerations into overall health strategies, thereby enhancing the comprehensive care provided to our patients.
  • Collect, meticulously analyse, and accurately report on oral health data to provide valuable insights that inform continuous service improvements and the development of more effective patient care strategies.
  • Maintain patient records with strict adherence to all confidentiality protocols and relevant legal standards, ensuring the privacy and security of sensitive patient information.
  • Manage the inventory of all dental supplies efficiently and ensure the proper maintenance of all dental equipment, contributing to the smooth operation of the dental services.
  • Stay consistently updated on the latest advancements in dental practices and emerging technologies, actively applying evidence-based best practices to enhance the quality of patient care provided.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all infection control protocols and the consistent and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to maintain a safe environment for both patients and staff.
  • Collaborate closely and effectively with dentists, dental nurses, and other healthcare professionals within the medical centre to deliver the highest quality of patient care in a coordinated manner.
  • Actively participate in community outreach programs aimed at promoting dental health awareness and the importance of preventive care within the wider community.
  • Adhere strictly to all ethical and legal standards of the medical profession, maintaining patient confidentiality and privacy at all times and upholding professional integrity.
  • Contribute actively to quality improvement initiatives within the dental services by participating in clinical audits and diligently implementing best practices to enhance the quality of care.
  • Comply fully with all healthcare regulations, guidelines, and internal policies, ensuring patient safety and the delivery of high-quality care in accordance with established standards.
  • Develop and implement proactive strategies to attract new dental patients and effectively retain existing ones, with the overall aim of achieving sustainable growth in the number of patients utilizing Penda Health's dental services.

Key Requirements and Attributes

  • Diploma in Community Oral Health or Bachelor of Science in Oral Health from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) is a mandatory requirement.
  • A minimum of 2 years of post-internship experience working in a dental clinic setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively and professionally with patients and all members of the medical centre team.
  • Demonstrated empathy and compassion towards patients from diverse backgrounds, ensuring a patient-centered approach to care.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities, with the capacity to manage workload efficiently and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • A strong commitment to professional development and continuous learning within the field of oral health.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment and also take initiative to implement strategies aimed at growing patient numbers.
  • A strong and unwavering commitment to patient safety, strict confidentiality, and ethical conduct in all aspects of professional practice.
