Job Summary
The Catholic Diocese of Kitale - West Pokot Region is seeking a detail-oriented and proficient Laboratory Technician/Officer to accurately handle biological specimens, perform a range of diagnostic tests, maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, prepare reports, ensure safe waste disposal, and adhere to strict safety and quality control procedures. Based in the West Pokot region, the successful candidate will be integral to providing essential laboratory services to the community served by Ortum Catholic Mission and the new Makutano Dispensary.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Collect, accurately label, and process various biological specimens (e.g., blood, urine, tissue) according to established laboratory protocols.
- Perform a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests, including hematology, biochemistry, microbiology, and serology, ensuring accuracy and timely results.
- Maintain all laboratory equipment and supplies in optimal working condition, ensuring regular cleaning, basic maintenance, and timely reporting of any malfunctions.
- Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the laboratory environment to maintain a safe and efficient workspace.
- Prepare accurate and timely laboratory reports for clinicians and ensure the safe and appropriate disposal of all laboratory waste according to established biosafety guidelines.
- Ensure strict compliance with all infection control and biosafety procedures to protect themselves, colleagues, and the community from potential hazards.
- Actively participate in internal quality control (QC) procedures to ensure the reliability and accuracy of test results and engage in external proficiency testing (PT) programs for continuous quality improvement.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Possess a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (or equivalent) from a recognized institution; Degree holders in Medical Laboratory Sciences are also encouraged to apply.
- Must be registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).
- MUST possess a valid practicing license issued by the KMLTTB at the time of application and throughout employment.
- Have at least 1 year of practical laboratory experience, demonstrating hands-on skills in performing diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures.
- Exhibit strong attention to detail, a high degree of accuracy in all laboratory work, and a thorough understanding of safety compliance.
- Computer proficiency for utilizing digital laboratory information systems and generating reports is considered an advantageous skill.
