Job Summary
Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, is seeking compassionate and experienced Clinical Nurses to provide comprehensive and specialized care to patients within their Critical Care Units. The successful candidates will be responsible for conducting thorough assessments, developing and implementing individualized care plans, performing advanced monitoring techniques, administering critical medications, and actively participating in emergency procedures and resuscitation efforts. This role demands a strong clinical foundation in critical care nursing, excellent assessment and intervention skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes in a high-acuity setting in Nairobi.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Complete thorough assessment and re-assessment of patients to accurately identify their evolving care needs in the critical care setting.
- Develop comprehensive written care plans based on patients' changing needs, diligently monitor the effectiveness of nursing interventions, and evaluate their impact on patient outcomes.
- Initiate cardiac monitoring using both bedside and central monitoring systems, expertly interpret monitor trends, and promptly communicate any critical changes to the physician and Nurse Manager.
- Perform various hemodynamic monitoring techniques, including CVP (Central Venous Pressure), ICP (Intracranial Pressure), neurological assessments, and fluid status evaluations; interpret lab results, radiological findings, and ABG (Arterial Blood Gas) evaluations to inform care.
- Document all assessment data, investigation results, care provided, discussions with the multidisciplinary team, and family/patient interactions accurately, comprehensively, and in a timely manner within patient records.
- Prepare proactively for and skillfully assist the physician in emergency procedures crucial for the prompt control of a patient’s critical condition, such as intubation and the insertion of invasive lines and drains.
- Initiate and manage mechanical ventilation (both invasive and non-invasive) based on physician orders, ensuring optimal respiratory support.
- Accurately assess a patient’s readiness for weaning from mechanical ventilation and implement the established weaning and extubation protocols effectively.
- Maintain adequate airway management through various interventions, including oxygen therapy, nebulization treatments, and airway suctioning techniques.
- Conduct thorough pain assessments using appropriate tools and initiate analgesia as per established hospital protocols to ensure patient comfort.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform hemodialysis as instructed by the physician, provide comprehensive care for patients undergoing hemodialysis, and safely disconnect patients upon completion of the therapy.
- Accurately administer all medications according to the physician’s treatment order sheet, with particular attention to inotropic support, including precise dilution, calculation, and infusion management.
- Identify the educational needs of patients and their families related to their critical illness and implement appropriate and effective teaching strategies to enhance understanding and participation in care.
- Demonstrate the ability to commence enteral feeds as prescribed, meticulously assess patient absorption and elimination patterns, and provide timely and relevant feedback to the healthcare team.
- Possess the critical skill to recognize a patient in a pre-arrest or cardiac arrest state, promptly activate the Emergency Response Team, and actively and competently participate in the resuscitation efforts.
- Provide a safe environment for patients by strictly adhering to infection control practices and all other hospital safety policies, and perform timely safety checks on beds, IV pumps, oxygen sources, ventilators, and cardiac monitors.
- Be fully accountable for the judicious and efficient use of resources, including accurate and timely billing of ward stock drugs and consumables used in patient care.
- Ensure the proper care of medical equipment through thorough cleaning, appropriate storage, diligent per-shift inventory checks, and timely reporting and follow-up of any non-functional equipment to the Nurse Manager.
- Actively participate in unit-based nursing education programs, quality improvement (QI) projects, Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC) initiatives, audits, spot checks, and skill checks to enhance professional development and patient care standards.
- Participate actively in the orientation of new staff members joining the unit and provide valuable mentorship and guidance to junior nurses and nursing students.
- Provide essential assistance in other related Critical Care Units during times of low patient census to ensure adequate staffing and support across the department.
- Undertake any other assignment that is deemed appropriate for this level of clinical nursing expertise within the Critical Care Units.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Possess a Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing from a recognized school of nursing or University.
- Hold a current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Must have Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Demonstrate evidence-based knowledge of current practices in the specialized field of Critical Care nursing.
