Job Summary

Mount Kenya University is seeking a dynamic Tutorial Fellow to contribute to the academic excellence of our Social & Development Studies program. The role involves teaching, research, and curriculum development. Successful candidates will mentor students and contribute to the university’s mission.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum materials to ensure relevance and quality.
  • Prepare comprehensive course outlines to guide effective syllabus delivery and coverage.
  • Develop engaging learning content to ensure thorough coverage of course objectives.
  • Teach Undergraduate, Diploma, and Certificate courses, fostering a stimulating learning environment.
  • Set, invigilate, and administer examinations to assess student understanding and provide progressive reports.
  • Supervise students’ projects and attend defense meetings to support successful completion of studies.
  • Conduct impactful research, prepare publications, and participate in conferences to disseminate knowledge.
  • Attract funding to support research initiatives and enhance university resources.
  • Facilitate enriching field studies and assess students during attachments, trips, and internships.
  • Actively participate in official University meetings and functions, contributing to institutional growth.
  • Monitor class attendance to ensure students meet the required lecture attendance for examination eligibility.
  • Carry out administrative and other duties as assigned, supporting the department and university operations.
  • Develop and deliver engaging lectures and seminars, utilizing modern teaching methodologies.
  • Provide academic advising and mentorship to students, enhancing their learning experience.
  • Collaborate with faculty members on research projects and academic initiatives.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology from a recognized/accredited university.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Sociology or a related field from a recognized/accredited university.
  • At least two (2) years of teaching experience.
  • Must be registered/registerable for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or equivalent Doctoral degree qualification.
  • Must be registered by the relevant Professional Body (where applicable).
  • Strong research and publication potential.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to mentor and supervise students.
  • Proficiency in curriculum development and review.
  • Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence.
