Job Summary

The Perioperative Nurse will be responsible for providing safe, high-quality nursing care to patients across all phases of the surgical cycle—including preoperative preparation, intraoperative surgical assistance, and postoperative recovery monitoring. The role involves preparing the operating suite, maintaining a sterile field, assisting the surgical team as a scrub or circulating nurse, and ensuring strict compliance with safety, ethical, and infection control guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Theatre Preparation: Inspect, sterilize, and set up surgical instruments, equipment, and medical consumables required for specific surgical operations.

  • Intraoperative Assistance: Actively serve as a scrub or circulating nurse, anticipating the surgeon’s needs, maintaining accurate instrument counts, and preserving sterile fields.

  • Patient Monitoring: Continuously assess and monitor patients' vital signs, airway status, and emotional needs before, during, and immediately after surgery.

  • Infection Control: Enforce strict aseptic techniques, universal precautions, and waste-disposal protocols within the operating rooms to prevent surgical site infections.

  • Equipment Management: Calibrate, clean, and oversee the proper handling of delicate theatre machinery, reporting any technical faults immediately.

  • Accurate Documentation: Document detailed perioperative records, surgical checklists, anesthesia logs, and postoperative care transitions.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Higher Diploma or specialized post-basic training in Perioperative/Operating Theatre Nursing from a recognized medical training institution.

  • Fully registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya as a Kenya Registered Perioperative Nurse (KRPON) or equivalent, with a valid, active practicing license for the current year.

  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Minimum of two to three (2–3) years of direct experience working inside a busy operating theatre or perioperative department in a reputable, high-volume healthcare facility.

  • Strong, practical knowledge of aseptic techniques, infection prevention and control (IPC), patient positioning, and specialized theatre equipment.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, rapid emergency response capabilities, and excellent interpersonal skills.

Added Advantages

  • Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
