Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Clinical Administration

  • Strategic Goal Setting: Lead the OR Recovery team in formulating, implementing, and evaluating annual goals in alignment with the broader surgical services and nursing division strategy.

  • Workforce & Skill Mix: Manage daily staff scheduling, ensuring an optimal skill mix for safe, effective, and high-quality post-anesthesia patient care.

  • Talent Management: Spearhead the recruitment, selection, orientation, and technical training of the recovery nursing team; design and execute nursing retention strategies to minimize turnover.

  • Performance Reviews: Conduct periodic performance appraisals for perioperative staff and develop personalized growth plans to cultivate internal talent.

  • Financial Oversight: Participate actively in the departmental budgeting process, enforce stringent measures to control unit costs, manage inventories, and eliminate bad debts.

2. Advanced Clinical Practice

  • Evidence-Based Care: Continuously initiate innovative, evidence-based strategies to optimize immediate post-operative recovery workflows.

  • Multidisciplinary Oversight: Foster a culture of safe perioperative practice by leading collaborative clinical rounds and linking all contributors within the care team.

  • Outcomes Evaluation: Collaborate with lead physicians to assess care outcomes through Mortality and Morbidity (M&M) discussions, analyzing clinical incidence trends and key quality indicators.

  • Competency Tracking: Establish and maintain robust tracking systems to audit and validate the clinical knowledge, technical skills, and active competencies of recovery room nurses.

  • Research & Mentorship: Act as a principal clinical resource person, promoting nursing research and mentoring staff to reach their maximum professional potential.

3. Risk Management & Customer Care

  • Client Satisfaction: Take direct accountability for patient, family, and physician satisfaction regarding perioperative and recovery services.

  • Grievance Resolution: Respond to and resolve client complaints swiftly, implementing corrective actions based on trends identified in patient satisfaction surveys.

  • Incident Escalation: Actively track clinical incidents or sentinel events, immediately alerting the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and relevant Directors of high-risk situations.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Diploma (KRCHN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from an approved nursing school or university.

  • Must hold a valid, active practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).

  • Valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).

  • Minimum of five (5) years of continuous clinical nursing experience strictly within Operating Room / Perioperative nursing in an acute care hospital environment.

  • Demonstrable expert knowledge, technical skills, and clinical acumen in operating theatre and PACU environments.

  • Proven leadership, conflict resolution, administrative management, and staff mentoring capabilities.

  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and basic computer proficiency skills.

  • Ability to work autonomously and make critical clinical decisions under minimal supervision.
