Job Summary
The Mortician is responsible for the dignified handling, preparation, and preservation of the deceased. This role involves managing the logistics of body collection, performing embalming and cosmetic restoration, and ensuring all legal documentation is accurately completed. The incumbent will also support forensic autopsies and maintain the high standards of hygiene and equipment maintenance required in a modern funeral facility.
Duties & Responsibilities
Organize transport and respond immediately to death notifications for body collection from various locations.
Perform professional embalming to ensure the deceased remains in good condition during their stay at the facility.
Apply cosmetics, dress, and casket remains in preparation for viewing or burial.
Assist with forensic and pediatric autopsies, including evidence collection and delivery of laboratory specimens.
Complete restoration of remains for release to families or receiving facilities.
Manage documentation and legal requirements, including burial permits and death certificates.
Prepare remains for cremation or out-of-state transport as required.
Maintain accurate computer records and batch registers for all tests and procedures.
Carry out general maintenance of funeral home equipment and machinery to ensure service quality.
Participate in unit-based continuing education and quality control programs.
Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective communication and care standards.
Support the manager in data collection and monitoring of departmental performance indicators.
Qualifications & Requirements
Certificate in Mortician Course from a recognized institution.
Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Minimum of 3 years’ work experience in a reputable funeral establishment.
Must be a Member of a registered funeral professional association.
Proven experience in cosmetic restoration and embalming techniques.
Proficiency in computer data entry and knowledge of medical record formats.
Strong attention to detail and active listening skills.
Ability to demonstrate high levels of empathy and diplomacy when interacting with bereaved families.
