Job Summary
The ICU Nurse provides specialized critical care nursing to patients in the Intensive Care Unit through continuous monitoring and advanced clinical interventions. This role focuses on maintaining patient stability and managing life-support systems while strictly adhering to ICU protocols and infection prevention standards. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal critical care outcomes for the most vulnerable patients.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provide high-level critical care nursing to patients admitted to the ICU.
Perform continuous monitoring of vital signs and neurological status for critically ill patients.
Administer advanced clinical interventions and medications as prescribed by the intensivist.
Manage and monitor life-support equipment, including mechanical ventilators and infusion pumps.
Ensure strict adherence to specialized ICU protocols and patient safety standards.
Implement rigorous infection prevention and control measures within the critical care environment.
Coordinate with doctors and other specialists to develop and implement holistic care plans.
Respond immediately to medical emergencies and lead life-saving interventions using ACLS and BLS protocols.
Maintain accurate, real-time documentation of patient observations, treatments, and responses.
Communicate effectively with patients’ families, providing updates and emotional support.
Perform regular equipment checks and ensure the ICU is fully stocked with emergency supplies.
Participate in departmental quality improvement audits and clinical research.
Collaborate with the physiotherapy and nutrition teams to support patient recovery.
Supervise and mentor junior nurses or interns rotating through the ICU.
Uphold the highest ethical standards of the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Qualifications & Requirements
Degree or Diploma in Nursing from a recognized training institution.
Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing is mandatory.
Must be Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Possess a Valid Practicing License for the current year.
Minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience in a busy ICU or critical care setting.
Must have a Valid ACLS and BLS Training Certificate.
Strong clinical judgment and the ability to remain calm under extreme pressure.
Exceptional communication and teamwork skills.
Must be flexible and willing to work on a shift basis, including nights and weekends.
