Job Summary
The Community Oral Health Officer (COHO) is responsible for providing high-quality preventive and curative dental services. This role involves performing basic dental procedures, conducting oral health education, and leading community mobilization efforts. The incumbent will utilize specialized clinical skills to manage oral diseases while ensuring strict adherence to infection prevention and control standards within the facility and during outreach programs.
Key Responsibilities
Perform comprehensive oral examinations and provide accurate diagnoses for common dental conditions.
Carry out essential dental procedures including extractions, prophylaxis, and fluoride applications.
Develop and implement oral health education programs for patients and community members.
Coordinate and participate in community outreach, school dental health programs, and mobile dental clinics.
Utilize Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) for accurate patient data entry and clinical reporting.
Maintain the highest standards of infection prevention and control (IPC) within the dental unit.
Provide specialized dental hygiene services and counsel patients on proper oral maintenance.
Collaborate with the broader medical team to ensure integrated patient care.
Participate in continuous professional development to stay updated on modern dental techniques.
Manage dental supplies and equipment, ensuring everything is sterilized and functional.
Qualifications & Requirements
Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Community Oral Health from a recognized medical training institution.
Must be Registered and licensed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
Minimum of two (2) years of post-internship experience in a busy clinical setting.
Valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Proficiency in computer skills, specifically in Health Management Information Systems (HMIS).
Strong knowledge of oral disease prevention and community health mobilization.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on patient empathy.
Prior experience in school health programs or mobile clinics is a strong added advantage.
