Job Summary
The Nutritionist II at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Garissa will be primarily responsible for the inpatient and outpatient management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) cases, as well as implementing Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) programs. This role involves following national protocols, data management, supply monitoring, capacity building for staff, and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Effectively follow MOH (Ministry of Health) protocols for inpatient management of SAM (Severe Acute Malnutrition) cases with complications at the stabilization centre.
- Ensure daily anthropometric assessments, feed administration, and routine medication according to protocol are done and documented.
- Implementation of outpatient therapeutic program (OTP) for severely acute malnourished children under-fives as per the IMAM (Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition) guidelines/ComPAS protocol.
- Implementation of supplementary feeding program (SFP) for moderately malnourished under-five children, pregnant and lactating women as per the IMAM guidelines/ComPAS protocol.
- Implement Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) program.
- Support capacity building and OJT (On-the-Job Training) for the incentive staff through identification of capacity gaps and supporting training.
- Support the systematic dissemination of key nutrition education messages to improve dietary practices.
- Monitor utilization of essential nutrition supplies and ensure daily reconciliation of nutrition supplies.
- Compile and submit weekly nutrition reports and monthly MOH summary reports for entry into KHIS (Kenya Health Information System).
- Participate in facility-based data review meetings and share performance on key nutrition indicators.
- Liaise with pharmacist/facility in-charge and order for nutrition commodities to be prepositioned based on consumption and clients on treatment.
- Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
- Hold a minimum of a Diploma in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics from a recognized institution.
- Must be registered with KNDI (Kenya Nutritionists and Dietitians Institute).
- Minimum 1 year experience within an INGO in implementing emergency community nutrition programs.
- Experience of Maternal infant and young child nutrition with strong BFHI/BFCI (Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative/Baby-Friendly Community Initiative) approaches.
- Experience in Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition.
- Experience in nutrition survey and assessment.
- Proven analytical, communication/negotiation skills and ability to think strategically.
- Experience in report writing and excellent computer skills.
- Ability to work in hardship areas (previous experience in a camp setting will be an added advantage).
- Flexible and positive personality.
- Strong planning and implementation capacity.
- Confident and capable negotiator, communicator and networker.
