Job Summary
The Locum Nurse at AMREF Flying Doctors will primarily manage all incoming communications to the Control Centre related to aero-medical services.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Operate the 24-hour Control Centre, managing communications via phone, radio, and emergency emails.
- Receive and effectively respond to phone calls and messages in the Control Room.
- Promptly communicate critical messages to relevant personnel for efficient patient care.
- Respond to UHF/UVF Radio calls and emergency emails in a timely manner.
- Ensure all communication gadgets (telephones, faxes, printers, photocopiers) are in good working order.
- Facilitate effective, efficient, and timely communication within the Control Room.
- Communicate effectively with outside institutions/agencies, including hospitals, EMS, and other operators for medical services.
- Maintain contact with patients, families, referring facility staff, and safety personnel to ensure continuous information sharing and loop closure.
- Follow up on in-patients, obtain progress reports, and handle medical assistance case files.
- Receive and address internal and external customer queries and complaints.
- Ensure all patient information/correspondence is accurately written and filed in relevant data files.
- Prepare and hand over reports to the next shift personnel.
- Receive, attend to, and assemble for emergency evacuation requests, gathering detailed patient information and medical reports.
- Inform clients of cost estimates and obtain duly signed and stamped Guarantee of Payments (GOP).
- Dispatch the medical team for evacuations in consultation with the aeromedical coordinator.
- Ensure efficient documentation in the Control Room, maintaining complete evacuation files and checklists.
- Be available to respond to Ground Ambulance standby/missions.
- Respond to and travel to areas of mass accidents with additional supplies to support the emergency response team.
- Attend scheduled unit/departmental meetings and provide support for any work-related activities.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Kenya Registered Nurse or an equivalent qualification.
- Higher National Diploma in Intensive Care Nursing is an added advantage.
- Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya and maintaining a valid practice license.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Nurse in a busy medical facility.
- Proficiency in computer studies (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CRM system, Outlook, Internet).
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- Good interpersonal skills and empathy.
- Excellent customer service skills and experience.
- Ability to work effectively in and within a team.
- Ability to rise to challenges and stay calm under pressure.
- Ability to maintain high level of integrity and confidentiality.
- Ability to solve problems and strong critical thinking skills.
- Ability to gather information and possess a keen eye for details.
