Overall Responsibility

The Project Nurse will be responsible for delivering patient-centered care within the cancer care project, ensuring patients receive holistic support throughout their diagnosis, treatment, and recovery journey across the Western Kenya region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care, education, and advocacy for cancer patients, working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary care team to effectively manage and coordinate treatment plans.
  • Thoroughly assess and monitor the physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs of cancer patients, offering tailored support and education as necessary throughout their care.
  • Conduct crucial screenings for Cervical (HPV) and Breast cancer following the latest evidence-based guidelines to facilitate early detection and intervention.
  • Administer vital vaccination against human papilloma virus (HPV) to target populations within the Western Kenya region as part of preventative care initiatives.
  • Accurately administer treatments, effectively manage potential side effects, and provide comprehensive education to patients and their families about their diagnosis, treatment options, and expected outcomes.
  • Seamlessly coordinate and schedule follow-up care, screenings, and referrals to other healthcare professionals as an integral part of a comprehensive and continuous care plan.
  • Collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized care plans that address the unique needs of each patient.
  • Actively contribute to the planning and execution of cancer care programs and initiatives aimed at achieving improved patient outcomes and enhanced service delivery across the region.
  • Diligently monitor the effectiveness of cancer care programs, systematically collect relevant data, and provide valuable feedback to drive continuous quality improvement efforts.
  • Assist in the development of informative patient education materials, support the establishment of support groups, and participate in outreach efforts to raise crucial awareness about available cancer care services.
  • Actively participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives within the unit and contribute to improvements in other departments as needed.
  • Participate actively in CNE/CME/Audits to maintain and enhance professional knowledge and standards.
  • Exercises economic use of suppliers and equipment, ensuring efficient resource management.
  • Assumes shift leading responsibilities, effectively plans, organizes, and allocates duties to available staff, while diligently noting attendance and punctuality.
  • Monitors staff and client satisfaction with services within the assigned unit and takes proactive and appropriate action to address any identified gaps.

The Requirements

  • Possess KRCHN/KRN qualification.
  • A BSc. in Nursing will be considered a significant added advantage.
  • Holding Kenya Registered Oncology Nurse certification is a further added advantage, demonstrating specialized knowledge.
  • Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • A minimum of two years of clinical nursing experience gained after completing basic nursing education is required.
  • Proven experience in performing breast and cervical cancer screenings, including comprehensive patient education, accurate sample collection, and diligent follow-up care.
  • Must be a member of the National Nurses Association of Kenya or another recognized professional nursing body.
