Job Summary

The Nairobi Women's Hospital is seeking an accomplished and visionary Head of Department (HOD) for its School of Nursing. This senior leadership role involves the comprehensive planning, organizing, and coordination of academic programs within the Faculty of Clinical Health Sciences, ensuring continuity, quality, and strict compliance with set standards. The HOD will drive curriculum development, manage faculty, oversee student progression, and ensure the delivery of credible academic results, contributing significantly to the hospital's commitment to excellence in nursing education.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and coordinate all academic programs within the Faculty of Clinical Health Sciences, ensuring continuity, quality, and strict compliance to set standards.

  • Plan and allocate faculty workload effectively, and supervise faculty members to ensure comprehensive curricula coverage in the Department of Clinical Health Sciences within established timelines.

  • Evaluate faculty performance in both classroom instruction and clinical areas to monitor and maintain the highest quality of teaching and mentorship.

  • Collate training plans, oversee timetabling, and ensure seamless coordination of Master rotation plans and the development of relevant training tools for various nursing programs.

  • Provide academic tutorials, instruction, and teaching to nursing students as required, demonstrating leadership by example.

  • Coordinate all aspects of clinical placement and teaching for students, including the effective management of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with partner institutions.

  • Lead the faculty in continuous curriculum development and review processes within the Department of Clinical Health Sciences, ensuring relevance and alignment with industry standards.

  • Contribute significantly to policy and process formulation for Clinical Health Sciences, and diligently implement all approved processes and procedures in line with regulatory requirements, including student grievance and disciplinary processes.

  • Contribute to the comprehensive budget preparation for the Clinical Health Sciences academic programs and ensure the efficient implementation of the approved budget, including preparing requests and approving purchases for the department in line with procurement processes.

  • Ensure timely accreditation and licensing for both new and existing nursing programs within the department of Clinical Health Sciences.

  • Oversee and ensure that all students meet the necessary requirements for academic progression and successful graduation.

  • In liaison with the Examinations Officer, ensure the strict implementation of the examination policy and processes to deliver credible, verifiable, and fair academic results.

  • Actively participate in academic quality and standards evaluations through the academic quality and standards committee, driving continuous improvement and ensuring the implementation of all recommendations.

  • Be responsible for the accuracy, safety, and accessibility of all student records, including Transcripts, Certificates, Portfolios of Evidence, and confidential files, as per regulatory requirements.

  • Approve student admissions into the Faculty of Clinical Health Sciences as per the required admission criteria, ensuring high academic standards.

  • Drive the achievement of high performance within the department through effective employee engagement strategies, including recruitment, orientation, induction, performance management, and employee development (training, coaching, and mentorship), to meet organizational objectives and goals.

  • Perform any other duty as assigned by the supervisor in line with the job description and the evolving needs of the institution.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Must possess a BSc. in Nursing from a recognized institution.
  • Must have a minimum of Seven (7) years of teaching experience, with at least three (3) years in a supervisory position.
  • An MSc. in Medical Education will be a significant added advantage.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Curricula development, implementation, and review.
  • Must be registered by the relevant professional body, specifically the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Key Competencies: Exceptional Leadership abilities, outstanding Communication skills, strong Clinical Expertise, and sound Business Acumen.
  • Proven ability to manage and motivate a diverse team of educators.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements in nursing education in Kenya.
  • Excellent organizational and strategic planning skills.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative and high-performance academic environment.
