Job Objective/Purpose

To provide professional and compassionate maternity nursing service and care to patients by ensuring their review and treatment as per the Hospital protocols, and nursing standards and practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the clinical team to guide patients through the childbirth journey, ensuring quality care and a good working relationship with all stakeholders.
  • Ensure the accurate recording and safekeeping of patient valuables.
  • Implement prepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care plans, prioritizing patient needs in the documented nursing care plan.
  • Educate patients and their families about treatment options, potential side effects, and necessary lifestyle changes to support recovery.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times, adhering to hospital policy.
  • Administer all nursing protocols according to established policies and guidelines, recording and reporting all sentinel incidents/events within 24 hours using the provided tools.
  • Continuously monitor, assess, and chart a patient's condition and response to treatment and medication, including their physical and psychosocial status, and adjust treatment accordingly.
  • Ensure proper documentation of patient notes and reviews, consulting with fellow nurses and consultants as needed.
  • Update doctors/consultants on patient progress and any critical values promptly.
  • File legal documents upon admission.
  • Complete official checklists for all patients before procedures.
  • Administer and manage medications, submitting new drug orders to pharmacy promptly and ensuring STAT doses are given within 30 minutes.
  • Maintain drug safety and keep the drug register accurate according to unit requirements.
  • Return all unused drugs immediately.
  • Ensure all verbal prescriptions are signed by the respective doctor within 24 hours, as per hospital policy.
  • Verify that all treatment sheets include patients' biodata and information on drug allergies.
  • Adhere to the 10 rights of drug administration.
  • Actively participate in ward rounds and receive handover reports from the outgoing nurse, ensuring all relevant consultants have explained procedures and obtained consent.
  • Maintain and enforce infection control standards as per the hospital manual and observe infection control bundles (SSI, VAP, CAUTI, and CLABSI) where applicable.
  • Ensure patient safety by following the 6 International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs).
  • Organize the emergency trolley for easy access during resuscitation, ensuring drugs and supplies are well-stocked, damaged equipment is reported promptly, and a checklist is updated on the 1st and 16th of every month or as needed.
  • Contribute to the unit's financial viability by managing costs within budget through timely and accurate billing of drugs and services and maintaining an invoice rejection rate of < 3% through proper pre-authorization and documentation.
  • Supervise Patient Attendants according to their job description.
  • Adhere to Avenue Healthcare's corporate governance policies, including preventing, detecting, and reporting any fraud or criminal activities, and implementing audit recommendations.
  • Maintain adequate knowledge of and compliance with all Avenue Healthcare policies, procedures, and systems, especially those related to medical service provision.
  • Adhere to Government and respective professional standards of care and treatment of patients as guided by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor in line with the job description.

Person Specification

  • Diploma in Midwifery Nursing.
  • Valid certifications in BLS, ACLS, ETAT+, and Emoc.
  • Valid Nursing License from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
  • Minimum of 3 years of working experience in a busy Maternity Ward.
  • Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a team player.
