Job Summary

M.P. Shah Hospital is actively recruiting highly skilled and resilient Clinical Nurses to join its dynamic Critical Care unit. Reporting directly to the Nurse Managers, these pivotal roles involve providing intensive, evidence-based care to critically ill patients, aligning with the hospital's core values including environmental sustainability. Key responsibilities encompass rapid emergency response, precise medication administration, continuous physiological monitoring, stringent infection prevention, engaging patient and family education, and active multidisciplinary collaboration, all while ensuring responsible and sustainable resource utilization within the high-acuity critical care environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive, evidence-based holistic patient care to critically ill patients, promoting their physical, mental, and social well-being, whilst actively considering environmental and resource sustainability within the intensive care setting.

  • Respond promptly and efficiently to medical emergencies and acute changes in patient condition within the Critical Care unit, ensuring all safety and sustainability protocols are strictly upheld.

  • Administer prescribed medication safely and accurately to critically ill patients, often via complex delivery systems, ensuring responsible use of resources and continuously monitoring for rapid physiological responses and adverse effects.

  • Continuously monitor and meticulously document vital signs, hemodynamic parameters, fluid balance, and other critical physiological data, ensuring timely escalation of any concerns and implementing resource-conscious clinical practices.

  • Uphold strict infection prevention and control standards within the Critical Care unit, ensuring environmentally responsible waste management in accordance with M.P. Shah Hospital’s IPC and sustainability guidelines, crucial for immunocompromised patients.

  • Educate patients (where appropriate) and their families comprehensively on treatment plans, prognoses, life support measures, potential complications, and the critical importance of sustainable health practices for long-term recovery and well-being.

  • Actively collaborate with intensivists, critical care specialists, other medical teams, and allied health professionals across various disciplines to deliver integrated, highly coordinated, and seamless care, supporting sustainable and efficient patient outcomes.

  • Conduct essential advanced nursing procedures specific to critical care, such as managing ventilators, titrating vasoactive drips, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) support, and invasive line management, ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and sustainable resource use.

  • Play a key role in ensuring that patient care aligns with M.P. Shah Hospital’s core values of excellence, compassion, and environmental sustainability, particularly in managing complex and resource-intensive critical care cases.

  • Contribute proactively to the hospital’s overarching commitment to sustainable healthcare practices in all daily tasks within the Critical Care unit.

  • Maintain accurate, real-time, and up-to-date patient records and documentation for all critical care interventions and observations.

  • Participate in continuous professional development and advanced training sessions relevant to Critical Care nursing, including advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and critical care certifications.

  • Ensure a highly organized, sterile, and responsive work environment within the Critical Care unit to facilitate rapid and effective patient care.

  • Communicate effectively and empathetically with critically ill patients (when able), their families, and the multidisciplinary healthcare team, often during highly stressful situations.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Must possess a Diploma in Nursing (KRCHN, KRN, or KRM) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized institution.
  • A Higher Diploma or specialization in Critical Care Nursing is highly desirable and often a mandatory requirement for this specialized unit.
  • Must hold a Valid Nursing Council of Kenya license.
  • Possession of a Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (or willingness to obtain immediately) is mandatory.
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainable healthcare practices and environmental stewardship will be considered a significant added advantage.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills specific to acutely unstable and critically ill patients, including advanced hemodynamic monitoring interpretation.
  • Ability to respond calmly, swiftly, and effectively in high-pressure medical emergencies and rapidly deteriorating patient conditions.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to provide empathetic support to patients and their families facing life-threatening situations.
  • Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team in a demanding and emotionally challenging critical care environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of critical care pharmacology, ventilator management, advanced monitoring techniques, and pathophysiology of various critical illnesses.
