Job Purpose

The OPD/A&E Nurse In-Charge will coordinate, supervise, and deliver top-tier nursing care across the Outpatient and Accident & Emergency Departments. The jobholder is strategically responsible for ensuring effective unit resource management, strict adherence to national and institutional clinical standards, optimal staff deployment, and a seamless, high-quality patient experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Departmental Supervision: Oversee the daily operations, triage workflows, and clinical assignments of all nursing personnel within the OPD and A&E units.

  • Quality Assurance: Ensure absolute adherence to the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) clinical guidelines, infection control protocols, and universal emergency care standards.

  • Resource Optimization: Manage departmental medical supplies, emergency drug kits, and specialized trauma equipment, minimizing wastage and ensuring constant operational readiness.

  • Crisis Leadership: Act as the clinical focal point for mass casualties, acute cardiac emergencies, and high-priority trauma cases presenting to the unit.

  • Staff Performance & Training: Conduct periodic performance reviews, identify training gaps, and champion continuous training in life support and trauma care for the nursing team.

  • Patient Experience: Monitor patient turnaround times (TAT), resolve escalated client grievances swiftly, and foster an environment rooted in dignity and respect.

  • Meticulous Documentation: Audit electronic medical records, incident reports, and nursing care charts to guarantee accuracy, compliance, and clinical accountability.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized and accredited university.

  • Must hold a valid, active practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).

  • Minimum of five (5) years of continuous clinical nursing experience, with a mandatory minimum of two (2) years served successfully in a supervisory, team leader, or in-charge role (preferably within a busy OPD or A&E department).

  • Current, valid professional certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are mandatory.

  • Exceptional crisis-management, administrative leadership, and communication skills.

Added Advantages

  • Professional certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) or Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) is considered a distinct competitive advantage.
