Job Summary
The Locum Woundcare Nurse is responsible for advanced assessment, staging, and evidence-based management of patients with acute and chronic wounds, ostomies, and skin integrity issues. This role involves developing preventative skin-care protocols, executing pre- and post-operative ostomy education, implementing specialized pain management techniques, and conducting staff training. The incumbent functions as a subject matter expert and consultant to multi-disciplinary clinical teams to maximize healing outcomes and prevent pressure injuries.
Key Responsibilities
Wound Management: Perform comprehensive assessment, staging, and treatment of acute, chronic, and complex wounds using modern advanced tissue-viability principles.
Skin & Pressure Injury Prevention: Design and implement proactive skin care programs to prevent breakouts, friction injuries, and pressure ulcers in high-risk patients.
Ostomy Care: Conduct pre- and post-operative assessments and provide specialized education to patients and families undergoing surgeries resulting in an ostomy.
Clinical Consulting: Act as an institutional resource person for physicians and nursing staff; deliver specialized in-services on wound prevention, incontinence, and ostomy maintenance.
Care Plan Evaluation: Formulate, evaluate, and continuously revise individualized care plans based on patient responses to advanced therapeutic treatments.
Pain & Medication Administration: Perform rigorous pain assessments, initiate analgesia per protocol, and administer prescribed medications safely across varying patient age groups.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Consult and coordinate with nutritionists, surgeons, and other healthcare lines to provide a cohesive, holistic approach to tissue healing.
Market Product Evaluation: Stay informed on advanced clinical wound products available on the market, evaluate their performance, and make strategic supply recommendations.
Documentation: Maintain timely, comprehensive, and accurate records of assessment data, multidisciplinary discussions, and patient interactions.
Emergency Preparedness: Maintain active visual tracking for pre-arrest or arrest states and execute Basic Life Support (BLS) immediately when required.
Infection Prevention: Ensure a safe clinical environment by strictly adhering to institutional infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols.
Qualifications & Requirements
Diploma (KRCHN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized nursing school or university.
Must hold a current, active practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
Valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Certification as a Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse (CWOCN) is highly preferred.
Minimum of six (6) years of continuous nursing experience within an acute care hospital environment.
Deep, evidence-based knowledge of current practices in Medical-Surgical nursing and advanced wound staging systems.
Demonstrated leadership, clinical instructing, and departmental management skills.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills suited for high-stakes medical coordination.
