Job Summary

The Registered Nurse serves as the post’s primary nurse, responsible for the medical care of Mission employees and eligible family members according to MED guidelines. Key duties include maintaining the primary care clinic, managing a robust vaccination program, and overseeing medical equipment inventory and emergency contingency planning. This role requires a blend of clinical expertise, administrative precision, and the ability to coordinate complex medical evacuations and clearances.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain a primary care and urgent care clinic for eligible DHA American employees and their family members.

  • Operate an occupational health unit for all embassy staff, including contractors and local employees.

  • Evaluate and assess patients through physical examinations, interviews, and selected diagnostic measures within the nursing scope of practice.

  • Review and interpret medical histories to select appropriate treatments or facilitate referrals to Medical Unit providers.

  • Provide essential patient education on topics such as wound care, diabetes management, and general health.

  • Respond to clinical needs including home visits, hospital visits, and compound emergencies as required.

  • Arrange and coordinate Medical Evacuations (Medevacs) in liaison with regional centers and local providers.

  • Draft MED Channel cables and referral documents with accurate medical coding for evacuation procedures.

  • Coordinate medical clearance examinations, including scheduling specialty tests and verifying invoices for payment.

  • Manage a routine and travel-related immunization clinic, ensuring compliance with CDC and ACIP guidelines.

  • Budget for, order, and maintain stocks of vaccines while keeping compliant logs and databases.

  • Oversee the inventory and procurement process for all medical supplies and specialized equipment.

  • Serve as the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, maintaining all emergency medical supplies on USG facilities.

  • Vet and maintain a referral network of high-quality local medical consultants, facilities, and blood banks.

  • Monitor local public health issues and coordinate appropriate responses with Embassy administration.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Degree (RN Level) in Nursing or a Diploma/Certificate equivalent from an accredited School of Nursing.

  • Must possess a valid, current, and unrestricted Registered Nursing license (from Kenya, the U.S., or country of origin).

  • Minimum of two (2) years of post-qualification work as a professional nurse.

  • English Level III (Good Working Knowledge) in both speaking and writing.

  • Must be able to obtain and hold a Public Trust security clearance or security certificate.

  • Strong knowledge of clinical assessments, health history interpretation, and diagnostic measures.

  • Ability to work effectively under the supervision of a Regional Medical Officer in a multicultural setting.
