Job Summary

The Volunteer Nutritionist at International Rescue Committee (IRC) will be responsible for the direct implementation of ComPAS/IMAM programs, ensuring the management of acutely malnourished children and pregnant/lactating women. This role involves data collection, reporting, staff mentorship, and integrating nutrition initiatives within facility and community settings, particularly in emergency contexts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct implementation of ComPAS/IMAM, ensuring management of all under-fives/PLWs enrolled in OTP/TSFP programs in line with WHO, IMAM, and ComPAS protocols.
  • Participate in data collection, data entry in registers and tablets, and reporting of IMAM data.
  • Ensure timely identification and treatment of acutely malnourished children and pregnant and lactating women by creating or strengthening nutrition surveillance and assessment systems.
  • Train and mentor staff (CHWs, OPD staff, auxiliary nurses) on the Family MUAC approach.
  • Participate in daily ward rounds in the SC ward, ensuring all required observations, prescribed treatment, and procedures are properly carried out and documented in patients’ cards in line with national IMAM guidelines.
  • Ensure all children under six months and their mothers are managed according to the MAMI protocol/IMAM guidelines.
  • Support capacity building and OJT (On-the-Job Training) for incentive staff through identification of capacity gaps and training support.
  • Implement MIYCN (Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition) at the facility and integrate with CMAM (Community Management of Acute Malnutrition) programs through group and individual counseling sessions and health education.
  • Monitor utilization of essential nutrition supplies and ensure daily reconciliation of nutrition supplies.
  • Compile and submit weekly nutrition reports and monthly MOH summary reports for entry into KHIS/LMIS.
  • Participate in facility-based data review meetings and share performance on key nutrition indicators.
  • Liaise with the pharmacist/facility in-charge and order for nutrition commodities to be prepositioned based on consumption and clients on treatment.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Hold a minimum of a Diploma in Foods, Nutrition and Dietetics from a recognized institution.
  • Must be registered with KNDI (Kenya Nutritionists and Dietitians Institute).
  • Minimum 1 year experience within an INGO in implementing emergency community nutrition programs.
  • Experience in Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN).
  • Experience in Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM).
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Ability to work in hardship areas (previous experience in a camp setting will be an added advantage).
  • Flexible and positive personality.
  • Strong planning and implementation capacity.
  • Confident and capable negotiator and communicator.
